Dude, you can't play the voice of reason card when your major contribution to this thread has been just to call me out.
You have spent every awake second on this board. And from my experience no one is allowed to have a different opinion than yours. I railed on GB for 2 years and you countered every post with excuses. You never let anyone get a word in here, it feels like your life is dedicated to chasing away some who are fans but not as deeply as you.

Just because I have a differing opinion doesn't mean I said other can't have an opinion. I'm just going to call out what I disagree, just like you're doing with me here.

That's not how a message board works

Again, not how a message board works. If someone says something stupid, like that Pulisic would just be a regular guy in an American high school, yeah I'm going to call that out.
People call me out for stupid shite all the time. I literally said I was meh on Gregg coming back... clearly wrong.
Stop clutching pearls, felicia.

Yeah, I'm the only on here that does this... Jesus Christ. You and everyone else on here do it just as much.
So you admit to it, and your excuse for doing it is “well everyone else does it”? Weak.

Because he's short, not because he lacks athletic ability.
I’d argue it’s a combination of both. But again, no development in those other sports plays a part in that.

Fact of the matter is, contrary to popular belief, athleticism isn't a "one size fits all" type thing for sports. There are different traits that are more suited for different areas. Which is why the "Pulisic would just be a run of the mill guy at Catholic" argument was hilarious.
Agreed. Doesn’t mean his whole point is to be shitcanned and thrown out the window regardless of merit, though.

Don't be daft.
I absolutely can. I can go back in my post history and find posts where I concede points to you.
Can you do the same? Or is your “always right” schtick always right?

I mean you can, but it makes you look just as crazed as you are portraying me to be.
I have no problem being wrong, I've been wrong on a lot of things and will be wrong on a lot more things.
In this particular argument about the athleticism vs coaching argument that always comes up when we suffer an embarrassing tournament performance, I'm right here.

He’s not saying it is athleticism vs coaching, you mongoloid.
He’s making a point that American athleticism could give us a huge advantage if we ever got our shite together domestically re: academies and access, and to a certain point I agree. Not entirely, but to a certain point.
If having the humility to concede points in arguments and still be able to conduct a conversation makes me “crazed”, then color me crazed. How old are you anyway, baw?
Damn sure won’t admit it in the moment… too arrogant and ignorant.
Gold, Jerry.

This has been fun as always, DByrd... can't wait to do it again when you pitch a fit about another take I have.
I'm sure it won't be too long.

quote:Look, when I say “our best athletes”, I’m talking the total package. Speed, agility, raw athleticism, power, but also coordination, spatial awareness, touch and all of the things that make a great athlete a great player in whatever sport he chooses.
Jesus Christ, this is a terrible take. He'd be one of the fastest dudes there. That's an athlete baw.
There are a lot of great athletes with raw athleticism but who don’t have the other attributes to make them a great player in any sport.
But if you have all of your best athletes playing soccer, you will find guys who not only would be faster, stronger, and more agile than Pulisic, but also have other attributes that would make them great players.
That’s what a deep talent pool of the best athletes gets you. Raw athleticism would simply be a baseline. And as it is now, American soccer players struggle to even meet that baseline. If the ones that do, an even smaller percentage will have the natural ability to become a great player. Since our talent pool is shallow, the players will always be lacking somewhere.
Only with a deep talent pool would you be able to field a team of athletes with the total package.

And around and around we go...
back to trying to classify what an "athlete" is.
Yet DByrd says the argument isn't about that.
You guys have fun. I'm out.

Personally, I was laughing when I used that word. You have zero impact on my life, but banter and back and forth can be entertaining.

Yeah, you’re ALL ABOUT being wrong in retrospect. You’re too busy knowing you’re right to realize when you’re wrong in the moment, which is what I commented before this.
I did NOT comment that you don’t retroactively realize when you are wrong.

One of the things Klinsmann was working on and he did improve it. Imagine had he been given 6 years. Sometimes you have to fail before you succeed.
Klinsmann always should have been a technical director or youth guy rather than a head coach. He doesn’t understand anything about coaching and makes GGG look like Pep.
I can’t take a guy seriously who starts an attacking midfielder as a lone DM against fricking Brazil, starts DMs on the wing, and sends a team out where they are trying to figure out strategy on their own because they’ve been given almost no direction other than “play dirty.”
Under Jurgen we got massively out shot by fricking Haiti at home. We barely squeaked by Bermuda and Antigua and Barbuda to advance in WCQ. We lost to Guatemala for the first time in 18 years, and most of their guys were basically semi pros. There is a reason he has been fired or failed at every coaching job since he left us.
Here’s an article from around that time, written by Ives Galarcep:
quote:
The first clue Friday night could be a disaster for the U.S. was Klinsmann's starting lineup, which felt more like the result of darts being thrown at a board than a team created by careful consideration. Klinsmann playing players out of position isn't new, but he took it to a new level.
DeAndre Yedlin? Never mind that he's a starting right back in the English Premier League — play him on the right wing, where his technical deficiencies are exposed. Geoff Cameron? He's versatile enough to play a multiple positions, but why not put him where he has the least influence? Michael Orozco? So what if he can't even make the bench for Club Tijuana — start him at left center back, a position he hasn't played much for the national team before, if at all.

If that athleticism is such a drastic advantage that just needs development, you'd see it exist in nature. You don't because it's not tipping anything

Now most of these boys did play soccer when younger, but gave it up for other sports. Football, baseball and basketball.
The other issue is the emphasis that is placed on soccer by the general public. Our middle school program is not serious and really only for school
pride.
In other words it is an after thought by the powers that be.
But there is lack of care of youth soccer.
I'll also add here that there are lots, and lots, of small towns that just can't afford a soccer program, the same can be said of tennis. I grew up in a small town in west texas and there were hundreds just like us. You played little league baseball or soccer until the 7th grade, where you entered school organized sports: football, basketball, baseball (softball), and track. Those were your options. How many kids slip through the cracks because there just isn't an option for them to pursue? Thousands if not more. Smaller schools just don't have the opportunities that larger schools/communities offer. I don't know how to solve the issue, but it definitely exists.

What mainstream US sport is Messi playing?
Who knows, Messi if he was born in America might have played one of those “big 3” sports like everyone else but never made it to the pros. He might have turned out to be Messi the insurance salesman who was pretty fast back in high school.

quote:Its all the above, but it’s certainly also a lack of athlete problem.
I just don't think the USMNT is struggling because of a lack of athlete problem, it's a lack of development, coaching, and longterm strategy. The lack of development comes from the lack of a longterm strategy.
Look, when I say “athlete”, I don’t just mean how fast a guy can run. I’m talking about everything that makes someone a great player. Even with the best coaching in the world, coaching Tim Weah or whoever else from the moment they’re born, it’s very possible they just don’t have it in them to be one of the best even if they do have athletic ability.
That’s where the talent pool comes in. It’s not just about running fast. It’s about everything in someone’s DNA. The U.S. just doesn’t have the talent pool of soccer players to field a team of great players. It’s hard to find guys that possess both great athleticism and great technical skill. If the talent pool was deeper, the U.S. could field several teams filled with guys who are top-level athletes with top-level technical skill.

There are so many Americans that were fantastic high school athletes that went on so play d2 football or basketball because they were “only 6’0” etc etc
Those guys never kicked a soccer ball in their life. We HAVE to do a better job of getting those guys and developing them
Raw athleticism is the biggest advantage we have. We need to try and utilize it better. Obviously we have other huge weaknesses compared to other soccer countries with development and coaching, but frick you at least need to maximize your advantage and we don’t even do that

I totally agree. Plenty of potentially great players wash out of basketball because they weren’t tall enough or football because they weren’t big enough or whatever other hundreds of reasons. They’re playing the wrong sport and just never knew better.
Somebody mentioned Russell Westbrook and LeBron. I’m sure there are thousands of 5’9” Westbrooks and LeBrons out there who grew up playing hoops and made people’s jaws drop with their athleticism on the court but never made it anywhere because they’re too small.
