Haven’t heard any explanations on why were going with a B squad for the tournament. Would have loved to see our stars get more time to gel prior to WC qualifiers and WC itself which is only 1.5 yrs away.

Which is it, that these guys don’t care to represent their country or that we legitimately have that many holes in our roster and don’t know who our best 23 are and are trying to round out the WCQ rosters with domestic players? Feel like many other nations’ players would kill to play for their country, no matter the competition.

To ensure that they get a break before their season starts.

I haven’t seen this with past gold cups... is this a Covid thing then that their off seasons were shortened?

The other Gold Cups didn't have another tournament a few weeks before it.

Gregg has been pretty clear that after the crazy COVID season the guys need rest. Most fans agree with the move. Get the A team refreshed and ready for the next club season and use the gold cup to see who can be backups during World Cup qualifying.

Did you watch them kick arse in the nations league and represent their country with pride? This is a legitimately retarded take.

The top 15 places are on lock down. Many possible backups in Europe aren’t available because of their club season, hence the domestic heavy roster.

Those 2 nations league matches? I can’t imagine that carries the same weight as the gold cup, but I must be idealizing about the importance of a CONCACAF regional tournament at the moment since knockout stages of the Euro and CONMEBOL are ongoing.

There’s no more Confederations Cup so neither tournament actually means anything other than bragging rights and a chance to play together.

That’s fair, I’m just eager to see our best get to play together and gel more after having watched that Mexico game and seeing all these other nations best go at it right now on the intl stage.

Eta: feel like it’s pretty invaluable for the Euro squads that they get the experience of playing in a huge tournament between each WC

I’m told #DCU youngsters Kevin Paredes and Moses Nyeman will travel to Kansas City to train with the #USMNT as it prepares for the Gold Cup .

Nyeman recently received his United States passport on Thursday. Both players were on the preliminary USMNT Gold Cup roster.

Wonder if Nyeman would have been on the roster if he got his passport a few days earlier.

I don't think anyone really did, until the Mexico game. Now the Gold Cup feels like exhibition to be honest.

2017, 2013, 2009 were all B-squad gold cups.

This has been a fairly normal practice that the Gold Cup the year before the World Cup is always the "B-Squad" tournament for the bigger CONCACAF teams. Mexico and Costa Rica usually followed that trend as well, even after the Confederations Cup dissolved. I'm actually surprised they brought strong squads to this, considering Nations League just finished for Mexico and Costa Rica and the 2nd & 3rd round of World Cup qualifying just ended for Canada.

I'm not expecting this team to win it (Mexico will), but nothing would make me laugh harder than if we still beat Canada's A-Team (and Ayo Akinola) in the group stage.

Unless we play Mexico in the finals.

At the end of the day, the only non-WCQ CONCACAF matches that carry any real weight for the USMNT are matches with Mexico.

Like yeah, it was cool winning the Gold Cup in 2013 and 2017, but it also felt a little empty that we didn't play Mexico in either of those.

Beating Canada and being competitive against Mexico if we play are my only goals for the team as a whole. Dike balling would also be amazing. Some midfield depth emerging would be icing on the cake.

Looking back at the roster, we really need to stop thinking that Jonathan Lewis is a USMNT-level player.

I get that the provisional roster had little wing depth, which ironically, is our deepest position overall, but damn, we really need someone other than Lewis on the left side, or at least someone to push him.

The XI I want to see:

Turner
Cannon-Zimmerman-Robinson-Vines
Acosta
Williamson-Lletget
Arriola-Dike-Gioachinni... I guess

What I think Gregg will do at least to start:

Turner
Cannon-Zimmerman-Robinson-Vines
Yueill
Acosta-Lletget
Arriola-Zardes-Lewis

Gregg said Gioacchini will play on the right and Hoppe on the left.

It may be out there somewhere, but all I can find are tweets. I posted several of them on the first page.
