When did he switch to Mexico? Doesn't make sense for players who were born in the USA to ever even consider representing Mexico.

I don't think he is cap-tied to Mexico (I can't find anything that says he filed a one-time switch) even though he took part in their camp cupcake equivalent camp and made a friendly appearance.
As for the second part to what you said, it will always make sense for players to go with the team that has the easiest path to playing in a World Cup. Not saying Gomez is guaranteed to do that with Mexico, because he's not, but Jedi has LB on lock for us for the forseeable future (this cycle and next). Unless Jona wants to be essentially what Lund is for us right now (happy to be there guy), trying to break in at Mexico makes more sense.
Would still suck to lose a talent like him though.

He needs a move to somewhere he will actually play. Being #2 on an EPL does nothing (see: Steffen, Zack).
