Some snow the past couple of days.
Snow storm rolling through all next week.

How is Breckenridge looking? Haven't really followed snowfall until this week and I see all of the Rockies are suffering. I imagine thousands of Louisiana folks will be migrating there next week

Maybe an inch or so the last few days but should see 5-6" this weekend and another 6-8" next week. If you didn't know what last years conditions were, it's enough to get you excited.

Here now. Had a decent snow on Saturday, then pretty warm yesterday and today. Supposed to have good amount of snow Tuesday and Wednesday. Went yesterday and it was icy at the bottoms, but had ok powder up top. Still had fun

I've said it here before but if anyone wants guaranteed powder days, then I'll post what mountain I am going to and the dates I am going. Then you just visit the next few days after and you'll be swimming in fresh powder.
Whistler next year in Feb. for me...dates are TBD.
Just got back from Park City where I stared at a brown mountain. This week they will be getting a couple feet of snow. Like freaking clockwork.

What a day in Utah boys. I took no photos and just skied but today will try tiocapture a few

Reports are still trickling in the morning as I'm writing a bit earlier than usual. Solitude and Brighton reporting 19" and 17" respectively over the past 24 hours for storm totals of over 20" now. Alta and Snowbird reporting another 15" or so for totals of near 18" for the storm. Park City area with another 12" or so for totals of 13-15". Beaver Mountain with another 9" for 16" storm total. Lesser amounts at Powder Mountain and Snowbasin with 7-10" so far. 6" so far at Sundance
quote:
Anyway, the meat of this wave of the storm isn't even here yet. The moist SW flow will continue through the morning hours. Winds will continue to be strong with more graupely snow likely. The cold front itself will approach the Wasatch and Wasatch Front around midday. That is going to cool us down even further and bring a period of very heavy snowfall through the afternoon.

Heading to Aspen/Snowmass in a couple of weeks for spring break. I was pretty nervous about the lack of snow until a few days ago. This current series of storms is measuring and forecasted in feet, not inches.
Anyone currently around that can report from the Four Mountains?

Just finishing up a week long trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Bavarian Alps, about an hour and a half train ride or drive south from Munich. They celebrate Mardi Gras here (they call it Fasching).
Conditions were a little icy the first day, but we got dumped on the last few days and there was some decent powder off piste the past two days.
Garmisch Classic doesn’t have any beginner terrain, so I wouldn’t advise this mountain unless you’re advanced or an expert. It’s quite steep and the fricking Germans make so many turns on the damn catwalks that they become filled with moguls. Blows my damn mind. But the Kandahar is the famous run that hosts a lot of World Cup and world championship competitions for the downhill. It’s a blast.
BTW - the Germans have never heard of lining up for the lift. It’s just a clusterfrick of dozens and dozens of people pushing up against those in front, other people’s skis between your legs, trying to skip each other until you finally make it to the chair. It’s not for the faint of heart and certainly not what we’re used to in the states. You’ve got to push and block your way to the front. I don’t remember this type of social behavior in the French or Austrian Alps, but it’s been a few years, so I may just not remember. I’m hitting up Val d’Isere in France next month and can compare social norms.

50 inches at tahoe in last 48 hours.
They need to open the lifts so we can make some laps.

Speaking of the heavy snowfall in Tahoe. At least eight and a presumed ninth skier died in an avalanche near Castle Peak.
NY Times with live updates
Why would people go into the backcountry when a heavy storm is on the way?
quote:
The bodies of eight of the nine skiers overcome by an avalanche on Tuesday near Lake Tahoe had been found, Nevada County officials said in a news conference on Wednesday. One member of the group remains missing and presumed dead, in what is already the deadliest avalanche in modern California history.
The skiers had been part of a group of 15, including four guides, on a three-day backcountry expedition in a rugged but popular recreational area near Castle Peak. Six others from their group were able to use a combination of emergency beacons and iPhone S.O.S. functions to contact rescuers, who braved treacherous conditions to reach them late Tuesday night.
She added that the group of 15 included nine women and six men. The survivors were four men and two women, ranging in age from 30 to 55 years old.

I'd like to think "people who don't know what they're doing"... but 4 guides
They made some bad choices, still a tragedy nonetheless.

It refuses to really snow at Breckenridge. Been here since Monday and only got 4 inches that the wind blew off. Looks like everyone west, Snowmass etc. got dumped on.

Ive skied deeper snow but I have never skied a day in these conditions. Just brutally awesome. Never let up, at all, winds howling so damn strong >9000' as I was just lapping off Dreamscape and Daybreak, people were buying beers for each other, charing backpack beers, felt like an LSU tailgate with nothing but smiles. Kids, moms, dads, bachelors, dudes...it was awesome. Cant wait to get back out there tomorrow with some better visibility.

I wish I could post pictures, but i would just be all white. Zero visibility. 4 feet of powder.

I just read it was a mother’s group and they were all very experienced local skiers, in addition to the guide company. Can’t believe anyone thought to go out in that storm, considering the avalanche risk and being cut off from everyone for multiple days due to the weather. Very sad situation

Any reports from Big Sky? OnTheSnow says they’ve been getting a few inches every couple of days, forecast to continue at least until we arrive March 2. Thinking it should be plenty good enough for 2 senior blue skiers, but updates would be appreciated.

Just got back from Whitefish. First few days were a little rough on front side of mountain. Got some good snow on Tuesday and Wednesday and rest of week was great. Was a better mountain than I thought it would be and liked the town as well.
