Any tips on booking same day round trip flights?

I am guessing google flights is my best option. I'll need to do this for Miami from new orleans every so often

Book one in the morning and one in the afternoon

I don’t understand the question

Are you talking about a round trip to one City, then another round trip on another airline to another destination (essentially a connection, but 2 separate flights there and back), or a single day round trip to one destination and back.
If the latter I usually pick the earliest departure and latest return. Occasionally, I may switch to an earlier return flight if available and I finish my business early.
If the "connection, but separate flights", for international flights I schedule at least 2 hours between flights to account for late arrival, bags, customs (even with GE still can take time) and changing terminals if needed. For domestic flights maybe 1.5 hours?

Also from MSY your options will be American or Spirit for direct, can add SW if Fort Lauderdale is ok.

i would buy a refundable ticket in case you miss the return..

No, it's not, especially if you miss the afternoon flight. Use Google Flights to figure out what the pricing calendar looks like, but you probably will not have any flexibility anyway assuming this is from work.
Book the same airline there and back, on the airline's own site, with the airline that has the most MIA-MSY flights per day (greater chance of getting able to be rebooked if you miss the return.)

I've done five daytrips like this to Chicago and one to DEN -- all of them just for fun. It's great to travel and not have to deal with luggage.

Yeah, I commuted for a weekly meeting from HOU to DAL, on SWA, of course, every Friday. I never even left HQ at Love the entire day. Just a laptop. There were actually a not insignificant amount of people that lived in Houston and commuted to DAL nearly every day to work at corporate. I'd imagine most of them are probably getting pink slips.

Yeah, I always think about the UC Berkeley student who commuted to school by plane because rent in Berkeley is so expensive.

This is what i will be doing. Just wondering if anyone had figured out a good tip for this. It didn't hurt to ask

Advice, since you are on the ground for a limited period of time how you leave/return to the airport is really important. I've only rented a car once on a same day trip and it wasn't worth it for me dealing with shuttle/train ride from terminal, pick-up, gas, return, shuttle/train ride back to terminal. I'm usually going to one area for the day in a City so I look at transit, then rideshare options first, especially since I can work on the ride without worrying about navigation, traffic and parking.
Second, if needed pick up a quick snack you can bring through security if dinner isn't planned unless you know you will have an hour before the flight to get food at the airport or in a lounge.
Where in Miami is your destination for the day?

I did it once for a client meeting in Atlanta. MSY>ATL
It wasn't bad at all, but I can't imagine making a habit of it.

That will vary
As said keep Ft Lauderdale in mind then also as it could make sense to fly there.

LOL, IAH--AUS-IAH-OKC in the same day. I really needed to give a privacy lunch and learn in Austin, apparently.

Don't think I totally understand the answer you're looking for, but you'll get a feel for the flights you need to book as you get further into the same day travel between MSY and MIA.
From my personal experience, I fly ORD <-> LAX and SFO multiple times each month and, honestly, the travel gets tedious. There are times I'd rather bite the bullet and do it all without a hotel. With so much travel to both places, I've been able to carve out a pretty consistent schedule with clients, events, etc. It's easy to forecast what flights I need to book when I travel same day. Almost always, it's first flight out of ORD and first red-eye back.

That is what I am referring to. A hotel isn't necessary every time I go there so I would try and get the earliest and latest flight out. FLL is an option and ubering isn't that big of a deal for me. I just thought I would ask if anyone had any tips or even websites that are helpful with this
