A few years ago my wife and I went skiing for the first time, someone recommended Vermont. Was perfect for us- first timers, went during Mardi Gras.

Stowe is a great mountain for beginners. Took my wife there for her third time, She really got her confidence up.

Colorado-wise, Breck is a great all around mountain and does have a decent town too. There is a dog sledding company a few miles away that would probably be a lot of fun for your kids.

I tell people who want to learn to ski to go to Copper. The mountain is laid out by colors, green to the west, black to the east and blues in the middle. So you wont ride up a lift that you think is green and then have to ski two blacks and a blue to get to the green run(looking at you Vail). My two kids learned to ski there two years ago.

IMO, all the Colorado resorts are fun and should have good snow in January. They all cater to families and will go out of their way to make sure you have a good time. If you aren't from here, then they will all look the same once you're making turns down the hill. The i70 ones will only be packed on the weekends and only from 10-2, us Denver folk have jobs during the week.

IMO Breck is the perfect family ski town. I love it all-slopes, shopping, restaurants, beauty, ease to get around.

My family loves it and we can’t wait to go back.

Going to go against the grain here, but I wouldn't recommend Keystone for your first trip.

The mountain doesn't have many greens. You will be doing the same 6-7 runs over and over again(1 run in particular).
Keystone also doesn't have much to do in town like there is in Steamboat/Breckenridge/Winter Park.

Breckinridge was always my favorite, but the prices have gone through the roof. I go to keystone now and ski at A-basin which is half the price to ski and ski school.

I know you didn't recommend Arapahoe Basin, I just wanted to say that AB is not a place for beginners. Plus it is isolated.

Those beginners routes to the left are complicated by trees.

I learned how to ski in North Carolina and the expert slopes there are beginners slopes in Colorado. Keystone was great until the last part before you get on the gondola...

Pure ice and if you don't know how to ski on it ala overcrowded eastern resorts...good luck.

My recommendation, as you have small children and you are going to pull muscles that you never knew you had and will wake up in the morning unable to walk, much less ski...

Breckenridge. Biggest town in the area and accessible beginner slopes.

Keystone is flat, flat, flat. Plus they have night skiing which is usually pretty fun and pretty much dead. Blues there would be green most other places in the county. There’s not a whole lot going on after skiing though. Breck and even Frisco has more of that ski town feeling than Keystone does.

He’s a new skier himself. He’s not going to be doing anything but beginner and easy intermediate slopes if he wants to enjoy himself.

In my opinion, in that case, Copper Mountain is excellent because one entire mountain is almost all beginner runs from the top. That gives even a beginner lots of variety. Some very long, wide, relatively easy runs.

Frisco is a nice town to stay in if you go to Copper.
