Top 10 Places Video

Certainly not a place that would be top of mind for your next international trip. But in assessing where you can travel to in 2021 the Balkan region emerges as one of the only likely destinations at this point. Maybe things improve in the coming months. Certainly hope so.

Been to Slovenia, Serbia and Croatia, all which are amazing destinations in and of themselves. Slovenia parciularly.

On the "research radar" this year has been Montenegro and possibly Albania. But I tell ya, the more articles I read and videos I see about Bosnia and Herzegovina the more I'm intrigued. A lot of natural beauty and there's the whole Balkan War history and touring one can get when traveling to the region. Many of us can remember that like yesterday.

Anyone ever been?

No, just Kosovo which is the Livingston Parish of the region.

From what I heard, Croatia and Slovenia are truly the gems of the region, but I'll defer to your experience there.

Even Kosovo was beautiful in spots, so go for it. Hell, the whole of Yugoslavia wasn't as big as Texas, I don't think. See it all.

I should look into Bosnia and Montenegro as possible workaround if Croatia is troublesome. Flying into Zagreb and out Dubrovnik so I'm sure I could workaround since they allow transit across even when locked down.

Would be random as hell but better than nothing.

I have been all over the region. Croatia is the best.

I was stationed in Camp Dobol, Bosnia for a deployment in 1999. We did daily patrols to Zvornik, a town on the Drina River that borders Serbia. Then Kosova kicked off and went there for a few months then back to Bosnia.

We made it to Sarajevo (French controlled area) once and it was awesome. We ditched the platoon leader and went bar to bar with M9 pistols and M4 rifles having a hell of a time. The city was beautiful but it was still war torn.

Overall, gorgeous mountainous area but their infrastructure is subpar. The women are hot but not as hot as Croatians.

That is a fascinating story and thank you for your service and for sharing that. Not many people get to hear those kind of stories about that period. Feel free to share more as it's part of the fascination the Balkans have to many.

Evidence of war was visible in some of the parts of Serbia and Croatia we visited. Some pictures from Serbia.

Good article.

Building bombed by NATO in Belgrade:

I wonder what the impressions would be in today's Bosnia and Herzegovina vs. then? Seems they've made great strides in their politics and infrastructure development.

Been to Mostar and then all over Croatia. Mostar was great.

Croatia is one of my favorite places on this planet.

Tell me more about Mostar. Was this during the war / peace keeping missions or recent as a tourist? How did you get there (i.e. rent a car?). Seems like the accommodations and restaurants these days (at least what I can gather from travel videos) is excellent and cheap. Further, the surrounding countryside looks spectacular.

And agree on Croatia. Spent a week there a few years ago. Plitvice National Park is the singularly most amazing thing I've seen. Our stay in Opatija along the coast was really nice. We've looked at some of the cruises they do (small ships, maybe 40 or less) along the coast and they look spectacular as well. This includes Kotor in Montenegro which we've been researching recently.

This itinerary from a blogger looked almost ideal if you were to rent a car: LINK

Mostar.

I was at Camp Dobol from Sep 97-March 98. Then went Camp Demi for another four months.

Beautiful country obviously I didn’t get to experience any of the tourists attractions.

I was artillery so unlike you I didn’t get go on daily patrols. Occasionally one of my buddies in the scout unit would let me tag along on his patrols so I wouldn’t go stir crazy at Camp Dobol.

I have always said I wanted to go back to see the country as a tourist. Kind of makes the year I spent there worth it knowing that the area is “thriving.”

I spent about a week in B&H in 2017 and really enjoyed it. Far fewer tourists so easier to enjoy. A bit rougher around the edges which I like in comparison to Croatia. Sarajevo was beautiful. It's history is viscerally apparent everywhere you look. Visit the genocide museum. Mostar is smaller but definitely worth visiting. The a Dinarian Alps running through the Balkans are pretty. I went to Sutjeska National Park and had the whole wilderness to myself it seemed. Food is similar to the rest of the Balkans. Cevapi, borek, and Pljeskavica.

My initial itinerary is land in Zagreb about 7:30pm and stay. Head to Plitvice next day.

From Plitvice stay at Sibenik and do Krka next day.

From there it's Split for 2 days, Hvar 3 days, Dubrovnik 3 days then home.

There's some cool topography I wanted to see but don't want to rush it. For example, Omis, Vis, etc. Also a bajillion other smaller towns.

We stayed at the sultans suite at a B&B. Very nice and safe. We had a rental car. 1 full day there is sufficient.

We visited a couple mosques and did a private walking tour centered around the war. The bridge is incredibly beautiful and the rebuild signified the new-found unity.

Parts of Bosnia fe0lt like the war was yesterday. Croatia has moved on mostly.

We enjoyed Split the most. Hvar was great too. Dubrovnik feels like an amazing movie set.

If I were single, I would move there.

Heads up OP.

Found out today my Turkish Air flights were cancelled from IAH-IST-ZAG.

Since they were award seats I had to go through a PITA process of finding whole new dates I could find seats on. Ended up on Lufthansa two weeks later and Turkish Air same return routing.

You may be paying cash but I'd be careful making sure your money doesn't get locked up with an airline.

Bright side I guess is there is almost no doubt I'll be vaccinated by then which might make the process less painful.

Thanks for the update on that. Haven't booked flights yet, we're just doing some initial homework.

PS: Here are a few select photos from Croatia!

We stayed in the Plitvice Miric Inn. Couple of miles from the entrance. Nice accommodations and meals. The Inn's Site.

Make sure you get to the gate 1st thing in morning. Like 8am. When the tour buses arrive around noon it can be nightmarish, worse so I'm sure in season.

We had dinner one night at House Katrina. Small family run restaurant. Limited seating. Call ahead or you might not be able to get seated. Meal was great. Excellent service.

Another night we tried Licka Kuca National Restaurant (Yes I cut and pasted that!) Great traditional food with a modern twist. Really nice atmosphere and good waiters.

Thanks for the information. I think I saw your thread from some years ago. IIRC you didn't update it on the Dubrovnik part. I'm hoping in some part the COVID situation is going to keep tourist numbers down across the board, selfishly. In reality I hope things are heading back to normal to however many those places want.

We didn't go to Dubrovnik. Want to go one day. Drove from Venice to Opatija, then to Plitvice. Then to Ljubljana Slovenia. Then toured the rest of the country, including Kobarid, for about a week after going to Lake Bled.

Unless you have already been there, I would devote at least a full day to Zagreb and take away a day from one of your coastal stops.

Zagreb is an awesome city with lots of cool stuff to do. Very underrated (and less crowded) as far as European tourist destinations go.

I'd love to but I'm crammed as is now with new itinerary which is now less days total. Unless I totally get rid of something like Split or Hvar I can't make it happen. I think Plitvice and Dubrovnik are non-negotiable. I already cut Krka.

It's not ideal but I'm desperate to go anywhere at the moment Plus second kid on horizon it's now or never for another two years as I'll switch back to domestic trips/await mask mandates to lift so I can travel with kids.

Good to go? In the region:

Montenegro
Albania

With restrictions:

Bosnia
Serbia

There's currently an economic interest loophole. Hence why I suggest folks not take those aggregate websites at face value.

I'm also going in June and Croatia is pretty adamant about being open during tourist season.

Lastly, I'm on award tickets which is whole other PITA

ETA: funny enough the US Embassy website just updated today to reflect the loophole that's been in effect since December. That's very helpful in case I get into an argument with airline staff.
