I have 4 children (13, 9, 6, 6) and am planning a 4 night trip to either Chicago or New York. I’m leaning toward going to Chicago, but was wondering if anyone had an opinion on which would be best given the age of the kids. My wife and I have gone to New York before the kids, but neither of us has been to Chicago. We are planning on going October 7-11.

There’s plenty to do in Chicago for 4 days with your kiddos.

Cubs game
Field museum
Aquarium
Lake Michigan beaches (depending on time of year)
River tours

Just off the top of my head.

I prefer Chicago. It’s cleaner; the L is easier to navigate than the subway; everyone is much friendlier.

We just took an adults only trip to NY in June and we were able to do and see more things without bringing our young children along. We are also going to Chicago October 7-12 (fall break) but we are bringing the kids along this time. Chicago has much to offer since you have young children like we do.

Field Museum
Shedd Aquarium
River cruise
Museum of Science & Industry
Navy Pier
Maggie Daley Park
Lincoln Park Zoo

If you’ve been to NYC, I’d say definitely go to Chicago. Great museums, aquariums, shows. Do the “ledge” photo at the Sears Tower (called something else now). I was pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed Chicago.

How about offering advice for this guy instead of nitpicking my response?

I don't have an opinion of one over the other, mostly because I don't have kids, but Chicago sounds like the new experience, so... that?

We took the kids to NYC on a whim for spring break and we all had a blast

I was actually really surprised how well they bounced back. Everything had good energy and it was clean.

I love Chicago too. Can’t go wrong

Either should be fun. I’d vote Chicago but that’s based on personal preference.

I love NYC but I feel with your kiddos they may enjoy Chicago more. Slightly less hustle and bustle and I think y’all will find tons to do with them.

Appreciate the feedback from everyone. The consensus seems to be Chicago so will likely head there and save New York until the kids get a little older.

Because the OP gave his dates and you offered 2 things (Cubs game and beach) not applicable to his dates.

Plus...we've just got to laugh at the Cubs fans!

Chicago with kids that age
Walking New York with kids that age is not ideal, and New York can be a lot of walking
