So we still have a fat snowpack. Im thinking 3 weeks until you can get up into the high terrain without special equipment. Rafting should remain good into July. Reservoirs are gonna be about full at this rate. Lots of water to let down the rivers later into the season.

We will be in Leadville 6/10-6/12. We were really hoping to get into some high terrain. We'll get some micro spikes or crampons when we get out there. We wanted to do Elbert but I don't think that is such a good idea with snow. We'll definitely drive up to Independence Pass, do some hikes off of there.

Got any suggestions for hikes in your area?

Stop in Guffey. Awesome small garage museum setup. Nicest guys that si tout side too. They gave me the key to the old city hall (if you want to call it that) and said just lock up when you are done. They also said the old museum/giftshop/antique building is open. Just hollar if you find something and he will walk down there to ring us up.

When we went back the following year, the guys there remembered us. Thought that was neat

What is in Gunnison you want to see?

Nothing in particular, just looks like a great park from photos.

We are not huge hikers but like to meander!

We went to Tetons last year, but have never seen the Rockies.

Not sure if RMNP is a week long adventure in itself?

Ah, I thought you meant the town of Gunnison. Check out to see if 50 is back open around the time you plan to be here. It is currently closed and is a helluva detour.

If you are going to be in that part of the state perhaps hit up RMNP, Lake Granby, and Steamboat area. If you dont hike, I would think 2-3 days would be plenty in RMNP, probably 2 days. A day at Grand Lake, then a couple days in Steamboat. Lots of other options throughout the area that are closer than Steamboat. State Forest State Park area has the largest moose population in the state and is pretty empty.

Save Black Canyon for another trip when you hit up the San Juans area.

I here now in Colorado springs, but I'm leaving to Moab UT in about an hour. Denver has some stuff to see and do as well everything is just spread out seems like. Yesterday we went to Royal gorge bridge that's pretty cool for the family thing. It's an 1:39 from Colorado springs though

I’m in Estes right now. Second leg of a two week trip. We stayed a week in the Rip Grande National Forest/South San Juan Wilderness with family. They own an RV resort/hikers haven right off the CDT. Was great, but the hiking was not kid-friendly.

RMNP has been great. Kids loved Alluvial Fan, 6 year old son hiked with me to Dream Lake the other morning and was the only kid on the trail at the time. He loved his crampons. My wife and I hiked to Alberta Falls via Glacier Gorge trailhead. No snow.

There is still snow past the lower lakes in the area. Keep up to date on trail conditions and consider getting some $22 crampons on Amazon.

Careful in Leadville. The altitude is over 10,000 feet. I spent three nights there in 2022. By the second night I was in the ER sucking down oxygen. Doc wouldn’t let me go unless I promised to unass myself and get to a lower altitude in Denver.

Altitude sickness is pretty frightening. My o2 was 86% and I was dehydrated to boot.

Just about all my go tos are snowed over current.

If they arent snowed over, the mud is an issue anywhere with a drainage. This is one of the more prolific early summer snowpacks. The melt has a lot of swampy areas currently.

Interlaken was nice the other day. You hit it in Twin Lakes, off Lake Co 25 (turn across from Aspen Whitewater red house). Its short. Its easy. Its pretty.

Same idea for the next one. Its gonna be not strenuous but there's stuff to enjoy. Go to Willis Gulch trailhead, just west of Twin Lakes village. Follow first two signs for Hope Pass. Eventually you come to a trail going up towards Hope/CDT/CT. There's a tree down across some muddy woods if you keep going right ...keep going right.

You can walk Lake Creek (which is roaring) over to the Perry Peak campground.

On the other side of the pass...the Grottos should be good to explore.

Snow sucks right now if you go high. Soft and prone to sliding. So be careful if you decide to go for a snowy hike.

On the advice of this board, I flew into DEN and went South on my solo trip. Hiked for just over an hour in GotG on the way down 25 because I wanted to make it to Sand Dunes NP for sunset. Stayed that first night in Mosca, then two nights in Buena Vista before staying in Fairplay the last night to hike some frozen mountain lakes and shorten my drive back to the airport on the last day. Sand Dunes does not charge entry fees before Memorial Day and there were no mosquitoes yet. I would suggest Southern Colorado in May, weather cooperating, to anyone. The drive thru the San Luis Valley from Mosco to Salida up to BV on a clear day is one that I'll never forget.

BV has a small campground that used to be a KOA. They have tent spots, RV spots, and small shed type cabins. They have showers, rec room, small kitchen, washer and dryer.
We tent camped here once and got the small shed cabin a few times as well. The cabin has a porch, swing, bunk beds and a double bed. We used this as out base camp. Our particular cabin sat up in some rocks looking towards Mt Princeton. We slept with the door open. Hard to beat for a 100 bucks a night.

We stayed at that campsite in BV last year with an RV. The view is so awesome. The sky can't get any bluer than it is over there.

That was a nice campground, and made me realize a lot of these campgrounds that we stayed in with our RV had little cabins like this. We'd love to make another family RV vacation to colorado but i could save $5k and drive the truck and stay at pretty much all the same places we stayed at. The RV allows us to ride comfortably though, and take the dogs since they have a place to stay if they aren't allowed wherever we are going. Been looking at getting a camper topper for the back of my truck and i would have a lot more room, and could leave them back there if i needed to. Just need to park in the shade if i have to leave them back there and crack the window.

Not to get off topic, but i find it crazy that you can rent a 30' RV that sleeps 8, and it's the same price or cheaper as renting one of those sprinter vans. I'd love to rent one of those vans to take on vacation, but I've been looking at rates and it's about $4K to rent a sprinter van after mileage adder, and i can get a 30' RV for $3k.

I've stayed in Leadville before, didn't really have an issue with elevation. We'll be in Estes Park for a few days before so hopefully we acclimate by then. Your advice is definitely good though.

Yeah I've been monitoring alltrails over the last week or so, and that's what I've been reading. We will get some micro spikes if we go on any snowy trails. We want to do Elbert, but doubt we will be able to make it to the top. Might just go up until we start to feel uncomfortable.

This is my favorite kind of stuff to read about on the travel board. Stuff like this and the cabins noted above are such neat little places to discover.
