Driving from Baton Rouge to southern Colorado at the end of the summer and looking for interesting things to see/do along the way. The plan to leave BR and get past Dallas on the first day. Then possibly see Santa Fe or whatever along the way. Thanks

Amarillo- the big Texan, Cadillac ranch, Route 66. Nothing between Texas and Sante Fe. Old town SF is a good stop plus there is a mission to visit. Enchanted loop is a beautiful drive. Taos isnt worth your time. Not sure how far into CO, you are going from there.

I have made the drive many times. There are 2 main routes, through Kansas and through New Mexico, via Childress. The New Mexico route has a little better scenery, but I would recommend just putting the hammer down and driving through. Don't stop in Dallas and don't hit Dallas during rush hour.

We will be in Pagosa Springs this coming weekend. It's worth a stop on the way to Durango. Cute downtown and the Lodge with 24 different naturally heated pools. Have fun!

Yeah, but he's going to the SW part of the state and will probably end up on a NM route but not the route of attack for the front range.
Go way longer on 40, like well into NM before turning north.

New Mexico route is quicker and better. I love driving into Raton. It feels like you’ve arrived.

Are you going to Mesa Verde?

Driven BR to Pagosa 4 times now. There's nothing worth stopping at along the way. Get there as fast as you can and enjoy Colorado for as long as you can. The scenery along the way is beautiful.

Not to beat a dead horse, but just like everyone said....keep your head down and power through. Stop for food and fuel. Enjoy Colorado faster than you would if you stopped.
The one thing I would suggest going to since you will have to pass it would be the sand dunes. It's not much but something really cool to stop and check out for an hour.
ETA: might not be that interesting for some, but it is a national park and I think it's worth seeing.

I just did this drive 1 month ago to help a friend move from nola to denver.
That 8 hour stretch from Dallas to Clatyon, NM is rough BUT it's pretty flat and when I went I didn't see a single cop, we rode 90 + pretty much that whole way. Maybe passed 10 cars total. Once you get to NM it's smooth sailing.

Following.... planning this same trip in July.
What are some recommendations of activities to do w/ kids in the Durango/Telluride area? I know, google, but wanted some first-hand accounts from the great minds of the Travel Board.
Also, does anyone know if/how the fires a few years ago impacted the Durango area and some of the sights?

Capulin volcano in northeast NM is pretty cool. Ancient volcano you can drive to the top of. Lava fields around the bases.

The train in Durango is amazing.
If you plan enough ahead, rent a Jeep in Silverton NOW. They book up quickly. The roads to most of the old abandoned mines require 4WD.

It would be. The Raton way gets you on the front range/Arkansas Valley/Park/Summit/Vail the quickest.
40 to 285 up through the San Luis Valley or even over to 550 up through Durango would be quicker to get to Telluride.

HOWEVER, we drove to the Santa Fe area in April and camped at Quartz Mountain State Park in OK. I’d recommend it even though it’ll add a bit to your total driving time. Cool area.

As some have noted there is little between Dallas and NM worth any time. If you do go through Amarillo, Tyler’s bbq is decent. However I would plow through Texas as quick as possible.
If you are going to southwest Colorado there are a few places I would look into that are a bit under the radar attractions.
1. Chaco Canyon in New Mexico - I love history and archeology and this is as good as it gets in North America
2. Mesa verde national park on the border of Colorado and New Mexico. One of my favorite parks in part again because of the archeological points of interest.
3. Wheeler geologic formation in Colorado. It’s a mini Bryce Canyon formation hidden in the San Juan mountains. Unless they have significantly improved access, this is a difficult place to get to and not feasible with kids.
4. Zapata Falls in Colorado. From the top of the falls you get a tremendous view of great sand dunes national park. This is a very kid friendly/roadside hike and a great welcome to Colorado.
