Respectfully, I disagree. If OP only searches for google flights out of Birmingham, they unlikely find an epic trip worthy of memories.
OP needs to decide what is important and what is in budget. And build from there. Select Atlanta airport as you mentioned.
Also decide if y’all want travel to be a part of your life or just one big trip. If it’s one big trip, only you can decide what is fun for the each of you. Fancy dinners, F1 racing, beautiful hikes, 5 star resorts, sex on the beach, etc.
If you looking for a few years of travel, play the points game. Sign up for a travel credit card at a hotel chain or airline. Earn points and get free night, flights, upgrades. It’s very rewarding to get a free flight to Europe or free hotels in Chicago.

How does you choose where to go on vacation next?
I’m a teacher and take five big trips a year according to the school calendar.
1. Thanksgiving Break: A major foreign city or a high mountainous area in the Southern Hemisphere.
2. Christmas Break: A major foreign city or a high mountainous area in the Southern Hemisphere.
3. Spring Break: A major foreign city or scenic area at low elevation and low/fairly low latitude.
4. Memorial Day: High mountainous area in the Northern Hemisphere that is accessible to vehicles and/or hikers.
5. 4th of July: Mountainous area at high elevation/high latitude that is accessible to vehicles and hikers.

I wasn't clear. I would begin my search from my closest airport then check from bigger places like ATL or Nashville even. Sometimes it is not worth the drive to fly directly from the hub rather than through the hub. If the ticket from Atlanta to somewhere is $100 cheaper than flying from Birmingham is that savings worth a two hour drive? To me it's not

Domestically you’re probably right, but internationally it would be several hundred dollars cheaper on average. I fly out of Chicago on international flights(not so much now that stl has international now) and typically save 300-500 by doing this. I just have to pay 40-70 for RT train but it’s worth it

I live in Birmingham and more times than not it’s a lot cheaper to fly out of Atlanta. Usually around $200 per ticket, sometimes more. And flying out of Birmingham on Delta almost always goes through Atlanta, with a layover so you’re often times losing time.
It sucks because Birmingham is a ridiculously easy airport to fly in and out of, but it’s usually cost prohibitive for my family of 4. Atlanta is only a 2 hour drive.

I've only found it to be economical to fly out of ATL vs BHM one time domestically. In most cases, by the time I factor in parking, the cost of flying from ATL is close enough not to warrant the drive over. Now internationally, I expect it to be a much different story......

Maybe I just pick the wrong routes or I’m not flexible enough with arrival/departure times. But I’m also usually buying 2-4 tickets so that $100-$200 difference can balloon to $400-$800 pretty quickly.

What are your hobbies or work? That helps me decide. Do I have any business trips I can bolt a long weekend onto? Are there any baseball games I want to see? What are my friends who live in interesting places doing in the next month or two? Do I want to try any new restaurants in __ city?
Honestly I find a lot of cool stuff to explore on instagram, I have my hashtags set to follow certain national parks, ships/ferries, restaurants, etc... rather than the usual influencer garbage.

For us, it really depends. Sometimes we go on google flights and pick places that have decent rates that we want to go to. In 2020, we flew into Amsterdam and out of Paris because we found flights for the dates that we wanted to travel for like $550 each. For a trip in 2021, we wanted to travel somewhere direct via plane that wasn't more than like 2 hours (because we had our 3 month old daughter with us), so we looked at Google flights and ended up going to Miami.
Other times, trips are scheduled around work conferences, for instance we're going to DC in May because my wife has a conference there. We're going to extend that trip.
And then, some other times we go places that our families want to travel to (often these are beach or cabin trips), or places that our friends live (Denver, NYC, Minneapolis, Hawaii, California, etc...).

I start with mountains or beach if I'm looking at US or Caribbean. If I were looking internationally, it would be what country interests me most.
After mountains or beach, the cost and what do I want to do on vacation, such as relax or be active. Do I want to hike somewhere or do wine tasting in Napa. Also, city trip or explore somewhere?
Those are all the general things I'm thinking. Once I've decided these things, I look at where have I been before, do I want to repeat a place, is it a quick easy beach trip (Mexico), or longer, etc. If mountains, do I want to combine it with a short city stay nearby? Then I start reading. I follow a lot of travel blogs and read a lot on trip advisor.

Honestly - not wisely when I was your age. But the internet wasn't around then either. Put some real thought into it. What do yo like? What is your budget? I have a very specific interest and go to the best places for that now. There is no easy answer, you have to decide on priorities and then do a LOT of research on your own. It takes time, but you will have much better trips. And yes, you will get great suggestions on here. But filter that with your priorities.
