Delta and Jet Blue are the best options.
They compete on service, rather than price.

Regardless of airline, I suggest as little layovers as possible and fly as early in the day as possible to minimize delays/missed flights.

Not sure if serious.
Checking bags? Southwest easy
Delta first, then United. Jet blues/Alaska are nice
If you like culture, spirit and frontier.
Better to tell us what hub to what hub and we can give quality options

Other than United, we seem to have a similar list. I gave him airlines to avoid, as he requested. So yes I was serious.

Frontier is very cheap with brand new planes but you better understand how they operate their schedule before booking.
Spirit has a business class (sort of) now on their new aircraft, and they often run a flight 7 days a week in the summer.
United has the best hubs for origin and destination.

My tip: fly whichever airline has a direct flight to your destination.

I’ve flown Delta, United, American, Southwest, British Airways, Icelandair, Air France and Virgin. Never flown Spirit or Frontier.
I usually go with whoever has a direct flight or best route. All things being equal, I usually go with Southwest. Had really good experiences with them on rescheduling and other stuff. American is probably my least favorite, that being said, I have a flight in January with them because it’s non-stop to one of their hubs. Granted, my return flight is non-stop on SW.
I avoid Spirit and Frontier because of the reputation and I often check a bag.

This ^^^^^
It's all a crapshoot anyway. There are nightmare stories and satisfied customer reports for every airline. Go with direct flights if you can, regardless of airline, so you don't have to deal with connections, layovers, baggage tranfers, etc. Then look at times that fit your itinerary. That's assuming cost isn't a major variable, which it usually is.
If you are an early riser, the tip about booking the first flight is a good one that rarely gets mentioned. For the early flights the plane will have been sitting at the gate overnight and the flight crew will have come in from a hotel so the flight and will have already been through maintenance, fueling, pre flight, etc and will be ready to roll. No need to wait on connecting passengers and the trashy people usually don't get up super early to fly.

I like the nonstop from MSY to Vegas.
I will never fly spirit/Frontier into or out of MSY ever. Not my crowd

This! I've recently moved Southwest as my favorite bc of this. I've changed my flights a few times & it's been the easiest process. Last time I flew SW, I had about 3 hours until my flight began boarding. I went to the gate & was able to get switched to the earlier flight that was boarding in like 10 mins, no fee. (The lady at the gate originally said it would have been like $200 to change flights, but my original later flight was already delayed about 20 mins, so it was no charge)

At this point, I usually recommend whatever airline is nonstop within reason. It's not worth saving $20 for 3-5 hours of extra travel with a layover anymore given how shitty the flying experience has gotten.
Honestly, I carry status with UA, AA, and DL which also gives me status on JetBlue and Alaska.
Every airline is the same, more or less. You’ll find weather delays, mean FAs, maintenance issues etc. for frequent travelers, it is a guarantee. For seasonal, just hope your one trip isn’t that “trip from hell”.
All things considered with AAs new “loyalt point program” I might just freelance.

I'm not sure that I've ever had a good experience flying through Atlanta.
Never had a real problem. Delayed? A few times, weather-related.
Never spent the night at ATL.
American was my go-to, but now it’s Delta, Southwest, and United (in that order).

I am starting to want to avoid all of them. The battle axe stewardesses never stop nagging.

choosing an airlines depends on your needs. because ANY airline is capable of giving you a bad experience. I had the smoothest flight ever once on fricking Frontier airlines. No wifi, small seats but the flight was early, quiet, and smooth the entire trip.

Good bump, I'm here to eat crow. My suggestion of delta, Alaska, and southwest earlier in this thread has gone out the window for delta and Alaska this week. Tons of cancelled flights (delta, Alaska, United) with no inventory to rebook anyone on for 3-4 days.
I spent most of yesterday and today trying to get someone from Ft Lauderdale to Seattle on Alaska after they cancelled his flight. Helped him get rebooked for Ft Lauderdale - San Diego - San Francisco today, San Francisco - Palm Springs - Everett tomorrow under a new reservation . His rebooked Ft. Lauderdale to San Diego got delayed 1.5 hours this morning so he missed the connection to San Francisco, got auto rebooked onto a 10pm flight. Found a 6pm SAN - SFO flight and amazingly a seat on a direct SFO - SEA tonight so he found a great gate agent in SAN that helped print out new boarding passes. She personally went to switch out his checked bag tag and then managed to get him on the last San Diego to Seattle direct flight today while he was waiting for the flight to San Fran! He's currently on his way back to Seatac getting in earlier than his original flight with his bag potentially showing up on his flight. Calling it a success story given the next 3 SAN - SEA flights today cancelled and the first direct flight option for Ft Lauderdale - Seattle was 1/2...
Moral of the story above is you can beat the system, just have to watch inventory like a hawk and be more flexible than you may have expected. If you find a good rebooking option, don't wait just book it as it could be gone in a second

Spirit and Frontier first.
I like to defend Spirit and Frontier because I think they get too much criticism.
I have flown Spirit and Frontier on most of my domestic flights in recent years and at least one flight into South America. They’re perfect for me because I’m a hardy solo traveler who packs light and can get by with just a personal item (my backpack), which saves money because I only need a base ticket. I’ve also been on a lot of long haul flights (flown to China, Australia, and many other distant countries) so a tight seat next to an undesirable on a flight to somewhere like Vegas or New York isn’t going to bother me a hell of a lot.
The only thing about Spirit and Frontier is that you just have to realize you’re getting what you pay for. I wouldn’t buy a $75 RT ticket from ATL-SEA and expect a first class experience, just like I wouldn’t buy a $200 TV and expect it to be as good as a $2,000 TV.
Bottom line: Is the experience or performance you’re getting worth what you’re paying for it? That’s the question you have to ask not just with airlines but anything you use as a consumer. For me and my needs, the answer is yes.
