The rain and cold snap was brutal here. It poured for hours on end and dropped to the 20’s even in lower elevations. My driveway was washed out in some areas, so I know the trail was wrecked.

I hope he’s ok and didn’t give up. Maybe I will hop on the trail from the NOC and head south for twenty miles or so and call out for DoUrden of Tigerdroppings.

Start yelling “tree fiddy” and see who responds.

Yell out “Larry Leo is the best sports reporter” and see who starts arguing with you.

where should OP be by now if he left on 3/27?

I am going to say 8 days of hiking at 10 miles per day. That is what most are probably doing. I would say he probably left GA yesterday. I don't know if he is keeping a cell with him or just relying on libraries or hostels for internet. I would expect computers are one of the things they flagged for possible covid transmission so it may not be as easy as usual to find a computer he can use. I just hope he is enjoying it. I just found out a guy I used to work with is hiking the trail this year as well.

There is fairly decent cell service on most of the Georgia section.

He said he was doing the approach. Without looking up, I think it’s 7 miles on approach 78-79 from springer to NC. The Georgia sections will kick your butt at the beginning. I’ve chatted with many while I’ve been out on day hikes that are only getting 5-8 miles in the beginning. Outside of the folks that do it quite often. The rain that came through his second day out was rough. Then the cold. As I recall he said his bag was rated to 32. Hopefully took a zero those days.

Did he say he was carrying a phone? I don’t think I asked.

Yeah I believe it’s in his video. Along with a battery pack. He said he had the Guthook app. I would assume for his phone.

Ok, who here is a bit worried at this point??
Perhaps checking in with us has not been a top priority, I hope.

I wouldnt be worried about him on the trail. There are too many people on the Georgia sections and its too easily accessed by roads every 5-8 miles or so. I think there is only one section where there is like 12-16 miles between two roads.

I am not worried as long as he made it to the trail. There are so many people on that first stretch that if someone were in trouble it would be pretty easy to get help. Most likely he wasn't alone at night.

This time of the year the snow/ice was a pain in the arse. The freeze thaw usually meant you had a trail that was as slick as snot in the morning. Had several fellow hikers injure their knee or break a wrist trying to catch themselves when they fell. Our last snow day the year I hiked was April 11th.

I'm hoping he is just not checking in at the moment or it's something like his phone is messing up due to that cold or something. I think he is ok, though I am starting to get worried.

As an Avid Star Trek fan, let me remind you Commander Data found himself in trouble at least once a season. Not to mention endangered the crew on a few occasions as well. Lol

Commander Data was a guy who posted a Go Fund me on the OT, raised a bunch of money, then questions started rising about where the money was going, then he basically disappeared.

As an Avid OTer, let me say... I remember that but didn't realize that was who we were talking about. I pulled my nerd card. Rookie mistake on my part.

I know that personally now. Busted my arse yesterday morning on a trail in New Mexico and slid about 10 feet! Thankfully no injuries. End of hijack.

I threw in a few hundred just to piss off the negative nancies who were cancelling their donations.

Hope he was able to get his wife buried and take care of himself and their kids.

ETA: if y'all want to start a gofundme for someone to go look for DoUrden I volunteer to hit the trail.
