San Diego trip

In September, I'll be there for a graduation, and would like to add a few days to turn it into a vacation
The first 3 nights we will be staying close to the convention center downtown, b/c that's where graduation will be.
I think we will stay an additional 2-3 days after to see the sights. Things I definitely want to do are the zoo, Balboa Park, and the Midway Museum.
I'm debating on where to stay during those additional 2-3 nights. Stay put in downtown, or go somewhere like La Jolla or Mission Beach? Also, recommendations for other things to visit, and restaurants would be great.

Following as I’m going in August. I will try and update this with my experience. We are staying at an Air BnB in Del Mar which is north of Torrey Pines area. We went back and forth between that and The Lodge at Torrey Pines but decided to save some money. We plan to hit the zoo, Balboa park, couple hikes but nothing specific planned beyond that.

San Diego is fine, especially if you do Coronado, Balboa / Zoo, North Park, and Mission / Ocean Beach, but you can knock each out pretty quickly. Definitely recommend moving up the coast, too.
Would do a day trip to La Jolla and Torrey Pines. A lot of picturesque walks. If in La Jolla, make it a point to stop at El Pescador for seafood. George's gets a lot of attention on this board, and the views make it for good reason, but I'd also go to Public House. Cool, relaxed patio bar.
I really, really enjoy Carlsbad. I'm there every few months for work. A lot of great walking along the ocean + you can stop into Carlsbad village for restaurants, patios/bars, farmers markets, etc. Oceanside is just north and, again, some great walking but a historically blue-collar city that is undergoing quite the change.

We went recently. Stayed in Pacific Beach at an airbnb. 2 blocks from the beach. 10 minute walk to all the restaurants. For point of reference, we stayed near Beryl Street and Mission Blvd.
We rented a car and drove into San Diego for activities with no issue. And it’s 5-10 minutes from La Jolla. Being able to walk 3 minutes to the beach anytime you wanted (just to go see it or sit down, not necessarily do beach activities) was fantastic. I didn’t see any beach areas in La Jolla and pacific beach is practically next door.
I would highly recommend pacific beach as my first pick. It’s very relaxing yet still has activities. You can drive 20 minutes to the convention center each day.
Mission beach seemed trashy. I wouldn’t be opposed to staying, but pacific was more local and mission was more tourist (for lack of a better term).

We stopped in Oceanside last month to eat and watch the sunset on the way back up from San Diego and it was definitely a different crowd than we saw in in La Jolla, Laguna, or Manhattan Beach.

San Diego is great
Stay at the Hyatt, it's easy to walk to Little Italy and plenty of other stuff like catching a game at Petco
Stone brewing in Point Loma is awesome
La Jolla is great. Beautiful, clean, relaxing. Georges is solid, especially outside for a sunset dinner, but there are plenty of good spots.
Italian Market on Saturdays in Little Italy is great.
Stay at the Hyatt, it's easy to walk to Little Italy and plenty of other stuff like catching a game at Petco

We just got back yesterday.
Stayed downtown at the Intercontinental but we had a rental car.
It’s across the street from the Midway and a 5 minute tram ride to Petco and the Gaslight district.
We took the car everywhere else. We went to Carlsbad,Old Town, La Jolla, Mission Beach, and all the way south to Imperial Beach. If you walk the pier you can see the border wall and Mexico from there.

Several great places within driving distance of San Diego to have fun. My personal opinion, go to the safari park for San Diego Zoo. They are 2 different things.
Go explore Imperial Beach and walk around, get out on the pier, take pictures, eat, have a good time. La Jolla is nice, just super expensive.
A lot of people think of Napa when you hear wine country, but Temecula has just as many wineries and is only 60 miles from San Diego. I believe there's over 40 within 5 miles from the interstate.
Other than that, a lot of good food spots down by Padre's stadium, not just dives either.

Sunset Cliffs, Cabrillo Monument, The Point Loma Lighthouse, and the Point Loma Tidepools can all be seen in an afternoon, like 2-3 hours. The views up there are spectacular as you overlook the entire city. Can't recommend this highly enough.

second the cabrillo monument, incredible views and you can check out the tidepools area as well
Coronado and the Hotel Del Coronado is accessible for dining as well as their beach area and they even let you grab a towel even if you are not staying there
