While all travel has gotten more expensive, I used to could find flights I want to take out of LEX or CVG for $350/ticket, now they are $600 plus every day I look.

And Delta severely limits the companion ticket usage, so it's almost worthless if you need to travel specific days.

If you’re savvy with points and how to research where to go, where to stay, etc. you can save a lot more than you may realize. I am not savvy at all, fortunately my wife is incredible at it.

We are in our second week of an 18 day Europe trip (1 week in Ireland, 1 week in Greece, a couple days in London) and by using points for various flights and hotels, we’re looking at about $2,500/person all in (though I’m not including tickets to a couple expensive things).

And we aren’t skimping on accommodations. It could be a lot cheaper if we wanted. Also my $350 round of golf could have saved money

I would say 5k is your baseline floor for a 7 day vacation anywhere “nice” and that’s assuming you can drive there

$5K is doable for a lot of locations with some planning and good trip design. There are many cabins/houses in scenic locations within a 12 hour drive of NOLA you can rent for a week for $2K or less, and in many of those places you are balling if you spend more than $500/day on food, drinks and activities. Takes planning, but easy to stay around $5K in that scenario

Other option is big cities where you can catch fare sales and can get around without renting a car for the entire trip. With enough planning you can easily find sub $300 flights to NYC or Chicago, and if you have the right credit card you can get a big discount and a night free on a 5 or 6 night hotel stay. Obviously, cities are expensive, and you can spend a ton of money quickly, but you can also have a great time spending $500/day, assuming you stay in the right area where you can walk and take transit. But this takes planning, the hidden costs that add up most are extra fees for booking events, especially last minute, and uber/lyfts, especially airport trips.

Companion usage is changing, you are about to be able to add Hawaii and Caribbean Islands.

One thing to consider if you haven’t already - do you have points you could redeem for flights? That would save a lot on a trip budget.

Something else that I consider that I feel like most people leave out is that you have to eat when you're home, too. And also, probably some form of entertainment? So, even if you spend $200 a day in food, it's not $200 more than you would spend anyway, it's your typical weekly cost in food minus the cost in food while on the trip. Same with entertainment.

Just a thought.

I don't typically breakdown the cost of my vacations outside of flights, lodging, and car rentals. Just counting those things it's usually more than 3k for a week though.

you have a 1hr 20m connection in Heathrow (London) but you have to go through Terminal 5, and you will never make that flight.

I’ve got a 2 1/2 hour layover in Terminal 5 in October. That should be doable, right?

Correct. The only food I generally include is alcohol and dinner out at a restaurant. I have 3 kids so we rarely eat out as in a sit down dinner more than 3 times in a week, I'd want to strangle my kids if we had 5 nights in a row sitting down in public.

So I usually budget 3 dinners out for a week "vacation" and maybe 1-2 nice lunches out and possibly something extra for breakfast if we splurge.

You are correct I don't think it makes sense to over budget. If you normally drive to work 5 days a week you are saving money on gas when on vacation, there's no reason to get hypercritical on costs spent and costs saved imo.

I know some people were shocked at the price of my (4) SWA tickets for about $5k. Those were Anytime w/ Early Bird. They were premium time, 10:00-12:00 basically, and obviously direct.

Talked to some families out of Dallas and they were north of $6k for American to CUN.

I think flights are just expensive AF now.

I’m sitting in Terminal 5 right now boarding the Elizabeth Line.

2 1/2 is plenty of time.
