I have a few global upgrades certificates to burn on Delta. Looking to take the family of 4 (me/wife/21 year old/20 year old) for a 7-9 night stay in Europe, preferably southern. Looking at Lake Como, Switzerland, and a few others. Anyone been in the winter? Really looking for culture, food, and sights more than anything else. My goal is to keep it to 2 hotels and 3 max if we move around. It would be the kids first time to Europe.

TIA

Can’t go wrong with European Christmas markets. Budapest is supposedly the best. Did Rome for NY’s which was magical and a blast.

I haven't been during Christmastime, but have done a little research. I looked at an itinerary that included a few markets in the Alps- France, Germany, Switzerland.

I read a bunch of travel blogs, this one has some good info: LINK

My kids have a favorable school schedule this year around Christmas- we have enough time to spend 8 nights or so and be back before Christmas.

Most Christmas Markets are closed either by Christmas time or after Christmas. There are a few exceptions but most definitely close at Christmas.

Lake Como will be pretty dead that time of year, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing given there won't be tourist hoards to contend with. Some things may be closed though.

Switzerland will be very lovely that time of year.

Not being glib, but what do you define as "Winter"? Because, activities peak up to Christmas. If it was me, you gotta map out when the Christmas markets are open and where you want to go.

Christmas markets in Europe start anywhere between November and December, and finish before Christmas or carry on into the first week of January.

When

Where

My favorite time of year. Festive. Less tourists. Cheaper.

Every European City has a Christmas Market. Of the ones I've been to, I'd highly recommend Prague, Budapest, or Poland (Yes Poland. Warsaw or Kraków). Maybe Vienna. Pick one country or City and immerse for that time so you don't stress the fam out.

Magical.

Some selected photos:

Poland

Czechia (Note some booths were closed due to Covid, but Prague is one of the great Christmas Cities in the World!)

Budapest:

Vienna:

We did have an amazing trip to Florence, Tuscany and Rome a little before and after New Years. Great time of year. Less crowded. Not that cold. Beautiful.

Good push on the definition of winter. So unfortunately our window is relatively small. We have to go while the kids are home from college but what complicated it is we can’t go before Christmas due to my daughter’s role in the nutcracker (she is a ballet major). So that leaves us leaving as early as 12/26 or getting back as late as January 12th. So ultimately our window is a bit narrow if we bring the kids.

My wife said no to Rome. We have been but the kids haven’t. We don’t mind big cities but while we liked the food she wasn’t a huge fan. Admittedly it was at the end of a 10 day trip so may have been timing.

I am not a fan of Rome at all personally.

What about Spain or Portugal?

For instance, places like Marbella on the Costa del Sol in Spain should still be pretty sunny even that time of year, I think.

It’s funny you mention Marbella. I actually am considering bringing my mom there next year. That was the first place I ever went internationally… 23 years ago. I would love to take her there and Grenada. Thanks for the suggestions as I may reconfigure things and see if I could do a 2 for 1 trip.

If you want a winter destination, Vienna and Prague would be very lovely, with perhaps a stop off in Cesky Krumlov in between

Any of the Christmas cities mentioned should still have a bit of lingering holiday spirit to them until New Years and maybe a day or two beyond. I recall Salzburg having some portion of markets open post-Christmas, maybe a few others. It won't be the real deal but it won't be January blues yet either.

If you go into it thinking you'll get full-on festive it might seem depressing (you'll literally be watching them take the markets down), but if you factor it in it can still be a pretty idyllic time in some of those areas and you'll be able to find some mulled wine and enjoy roaming around with lights still up, etc.

Do they want snow? I'm guessing they have an idea of where to go.

But switzerland that time of year will obviously be snow and very wintery.

I'd consider northern italy and maybe take a train somewhere else like Tuscany, milan, or venice.

Or France and go to the coast for a couple of days to get away from the "winter".

If you want full fledge winter, that's great too.

hey man.

We are headed back to Europe for the first time since Feb 2020. Sept 23-Oct 4

Heading to Austria 3 nights, Paris 3 nights, London 4 nights. Trying to get tickets to Saints game at Tottenham stadium. Paris and London will be used as reconnaissance missions for future trips.

Then hopefully headed back to Austria in Feb for some skiing.

You ready to play some 500?

Ceský Krumlov

Absolutely! We spent night there in December. Hired a driver from Prague that took us and came back to get us. Always been a bucket list place to go. Really special smaller town. A Czechia trip would be very appealing.

I love me some Vienna.

Salzburg (2.5 hrs) and/or Munich (4.0 hrs) aren’t far by train.

Good luck.
