From a coaching standpoint, it's essentially a wash since neither messes with the defensive side of the ball. I believe Lane's offense are more physical than Riley's, but Lane has also spent most of his time in the SEC.

Outside of X's and O's though:
Give me the guy who has failed, went and got mentored by the GOAT, and came out on the other end a significantly better coach. Give me the guy that's spent most of his career in the SEC and understands the grind of this conference. Give me the guy who goes and finds the 3* RB who becomes the best in the SEC, who finds a D3 QB and turns him into an All-SEC player. Give me the guy who has several videos showing how creative he gets to try and land recruits for his program. And lastly, give me the guy who walked into a program that was 123-122 over the previous 20 years and has gone 53-19.

John Summerall takes the Auburn job, most likely Baker will be the head coach of Tulane. So Baker wouldn’t be Rileys defensive coordinator.

I would take Riley over Drink in a heartbeat. The guy knows how to coach offense. LSU is putting up 30 every time out with him. You'd have to spend a lot of money to get the defensive staff to where it needs to be, but LSU has already shown a willingness to do that.

Drink is a guy with an offensive background whose offenses have kept his teams from taking the next step.

Lincoln Riley left Oklahoma BECAUSE they were going to the SEC. Why on earth would you want someone that quite literally RAN from the smoke in the dead of night to handle one of the most prestigious football programs in the country…?

What’s Lane won?

The 3rd most wins, over the last 5 years, in the SEC behind Alabama and Georgia at Ole Miss. Let me say that again, at OLE MISS!

Riley burned down Oklahoma on his way out and didn’t do much with USC. Drinkwitz did better with Mizzou of all schools. Yes, I absolutely would prefer him to Riley

Eh those 10 win seasons are counting meaningless bowl wins 2x and you have an 8-5 and 5-5 mixed in there too. Before this year he had been pretty good to good, no where near great and even that remains to be seen this year as their schedule has been fairly soft. Riley and Lane really are very similar in almost every aspect, Lane is just a little hotter right now but going into the season it would have been a wash. Riley has had more career success as a head coach. I'd take Lane right now just because of momentum but those acting like there is much difference are being prisoners of the moment

So just going to ignore that Ole Miss was unable to achieve these meaningless 10 win seasons for the 50 years prior? Gotcha.

Lane hasn't won shite in the SEC though.

I will say this til the cows come home, but in 2024 he had statistically the #3 scoring offense (38.6 ppg) and #2 scoring defense (14.4 ppg), and STILL LOST 3 REGULAR SEASON GAMES! He only played 2 teams that finished with 9 or more regular season wins in 2024. He beat those 2, but lost to 3 teans with a regular season wins or less. We continue to massacre Kelly for having an elite offense and the worst defense in LSU history, yet he and Kiffin finished with the same 9-3 record.

Again, would love to have Lane if that was the choice, but we keep propping him up like he is some God compared to every other possible candidate.

There is far too much fake information out there to realistically believe anything at this point.

Riley vs Kiffin what’s the real difference?

One ran to the SEC while the other tucked tail and ran away from it.

I don't mind Riley...but Kiffin is way more relatable with players and led the charge on NIL and transfer portal. I think that's the difference.

I'd rake my head over coals before Drink or Riley but if I had a gun to my head it's Drink easily. Why the hell would LSU want anything to do with a pussy coach who avoided the SEC intentionally, runs soft arse teams, and USC is mulling firing in the near future? We're not your safety net to stay rich.

Riley can't field a defense if his life depended on it which tells you he has preparation problems whatever he does. Doesn't matter who he gets as DC they suck arse always. That's a Riley problem because he's the only consistency. He's BK Jr. 30 years younger. No thanks. Horrible hire if they went that way.

We need someone that will bring a physical mentality not soft as toilet paper which is what BK brought. Drink at least has won in the SEC. Riley can't win at USC in a softer conference. You figure it out.

Lane has been in the spotlight since basically a kid, has failed, has succeeded and failed again. He's coached in the NFL and in the SEC more than once. He is now in the SEC at one of the traditionally in recent memory lower tier programs and has them not only competitive but in the playoff conversation.

Was also 'rehabilitated' by Saban to the point he started talking like him. To me, being the understudy had a huge impact in his development.

I was never a Kiffin fan, but if I have to choose between Riley and Kiffin, it's Kiffin all day long.

Kiffin has had continued success in the SEC. He knows the region and has significant connections from his stops in Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi.

Riley is best known for his success in the Big 12. That's okay, but I'll take an SEC guy over a Big 12 guy.
