They got beat by their in state rival by 6 touchdowns and didn’t score

Well, mostly because Barnhart is an idiot (see the contracts) and was hoping he wouldn't have to do another coaching search before he retires. The Board of Trustees and boosters forced his hand.
As far as who we get, Will Stein (Oregon OC) and Brian Hartline (OSU OC) are at the top of the list. Both have some personal connections to the Kentucky program. Chesney's name was mentioned by some folks earlier in the season. And then of course there's Mullen out there.

Stoops re-negotiated, so that's no longer the case.

It was 38 million whether they fired him now or 2 weeks ago. I know they were trying to get bowl eligible but he's been a lame duck for a while. 38 million is a lot for this football program and university to swallow.
Hell they cut employee benefits (reduction of ticket prices, free GA tickets to baseball games etc) in preparation for the 20 million revenue sharing. Another 38 plus hiring a new coach is a very bitter pill to swallow.

Would be interesting to see if Stein - born and raised in Louisville, Louisville QB and alum, began coaching career at Louisville - would take the head coaching job at rival Kentucky.

Stein is interviewing for the job. This may go quick.

Well, they've made it happen. And he's re-negotiated the buyout (it was original due much sooner) so they're figuring it out.
Word today is they're interviewing Stein (Rivals/ON3).

So, Stein's family are big UK folks. His Dad played at Kentucky. They still have season tickets. Grew up a UK fan.
He ended up at Louisville as a preferred walk on because Kentucky didn't have the opportunity for him at the time and his former QB coach at Trinity (Oscar Brohm) got him on there.

He's taken that program down a notch the past few years for sure.
Its Kentucky. Not many notches to go down

FYI, there’s nothing that can be done from a calendar standpoint that would change it. That’s a false solution.
If there were no early signing day or portal window, there would be no mad dash to get coaches hired before the end of the season. Teams might still contact coaches and agree to terms before the end of the year, but they could wait until teams are done playing before announcing anything. That’s really the main problem with the current setup that absolutely could be solved with changes to the calendar. Anti-tampering rules would be even better, but not essential to solve the problem of coaches leaving early. That would just help with coaches getting fired midseason.

Who did they really lose out on that they can’t find a comparable or better alternative now? That’s why the Kiffin stakes were so high. There was no obvious alternative.

Sounds good. But, reality is teams are going to fire coaches when they want to and can’t wait around to be left behind.

Sure, but that’s not really the problem most people have with the current system. They aren’t concerned that coaches are getting fired too soon. The problem is coaches being forced to leave for a new position before the season is over. A calendar change would solve that problem.

They had to wait for their division III target coach to become available

You think LSU was going to sit back and allow Florida to hire Lane or vic versa?
They are driven by landing the guy they want.

I think they will owe the full buy out within 30 days?
