I’ve got friends that use corporate discount codes at hotels to get a cheaper price. They don’t work for those companies and one even has a fake business card in case the hotel asks for proof.

What are the consequences if caught doing this? I’m assuming it is frowned upon, but can’t find much about it when searching online.

I don’t think the hotel desk employee gives a shite. As long as you don’t catch the general manager or something. Don’t think anyone would care to make a scene

Got any good codes?

I’m just wondering if you are using your name and a code and at some point they go through some verification process in the future and you get popped if they would come after you legally.

My brother used to work for Marriott and it was awesome. Pre pandemic nights at le meridian downtown NOLA for $39, suites when I’d travel with him, etc. To my knowledge they always confirmed the sheet with his code I gave them was legit.

I have alternatively used the "government rate", "hospital rate" and "athletic VIP" rate throughout the years with great success. Only once was I asked to provide proof (by some young kid while checking in the Marriott in Del Mar, CA).

Starwood had something similar, they called it their "Hot Rates". My nephew at one time worked at The Phoenician resort in Scottsdale and gave me a confirmation document similar to the one described above and I used it successfully for a few years. I recall getting rooms at Westin resorts in Maui and Scottsdale and at The Phoenician for visiting friends and family for $59/night. Good times!

You go to hotel jail.

Seriously, nobody gives a shite. The hotel doesn't care, if they don't accept it, you are just gonna go somewhere else and they will lose out.

What did they do when you couldn't provide proof? Did they take away the discount, or did they not care?

I actually have AAA & some other discount codes that I use when booking hotels. However, I've never once been asked to a provide validation at check-in.

They’ve been asked for proof before and when they didn’t have it they had to pay full price. I’m more wondering if they go back and account for a bunch of stays and add it all up and come after you for a felony or something.

I routinely call and ask for the best rate for a date. Then I ask if they have a better rate for government, AAA, or corporate. I book whatever is best of those or online prices.

Never had anyone ask for proof of eligibility except once in New Mexico after we got in a tiff with the desk clerk because he screwed something up and he was mad at us for correcting him. Fortunately, we really were eligible and had ID to prove it.
