Was old school CNN Headline News (1982-2001) the greatest cable news channel ever?

Pre-HLN/Nancy Grace.
Back when it was a rotation of tightly edited 15 minute compilations of political, economic, entertainment, weather, and sports news that would be slowly updated throughout the day?
You could watch it twice-a-day morning and afternoon, 30 minutes total, and be caught up on most of the day’s events.

I love it when they had the nightly sports show that was leaps and bounds better than ESPN

That's why people used to call it the Clinton news network.

Yes. When Ted Turner ran it it was the shite. Then he sold it and it became shite.

There was a time when CNN was the only option for 24x7 news, and they can say they were #1 then, and they were groundbreaking. That’s probably when and how they landed on every airport TV.

I can’t actually say that it’s an extinct news format. Most of the news companies sell packaged blocks of tightly edited news items to streamers such as Pluto TV and YouTube. It’s still basically like old school Headline News.
Still, I lament the Nancy Gracification of Headline News.

I used to watch the same sportscenter like 2.5 times every morning before school. My daddy would home from work and watch the 5:30 world news then the 6:00PM local news. It was like a summary of what was going on around the world and then you didn't think about it until the next day when it came on.

That's Chet's News Network, if you believe Shawn Hunter's dad.

We were in Canada when the TWA flight came down just south of Long Island. CNN was very new then and the first time we had seen it. Having a news source convenient to when we wanted to watch was really special.

Nah, Morning Express with Robin Meade GOAT

Lol, no, they were propagandists then just like they are now.

CNN used to be a news reporting organization.

Old School Headline News? How much propaganda did they get away with but just reading the headline and top paragraph of the day’s major stories?

That was my goto channel in the 90s as a kid every Sunday morning and Thursday morning to see how bad the lsu basketball team lost by lol

CNN hit its highwater mark with the first Gulf War in 1990-91. It became too chummy with Clinton afterwards, and now is full on advocacy journalism.

Back when the Turner Entertainment empire was a thing, and later when CNN and Sports Illustrated were both under the Time Warner umbrella, CNN had a fairly robust Sports division.
These days, I doubt the main CNN channel covers 15 minutes of Sports news in a day unrelated to a the ongoing culture war issues, and HLN sure as shite doesn’t cover Sports news.

CNN and CNN 2 had been around for over 15 years at that point, but I see what you're saying
