Fly or drive to Disney World?

We are going thanksgiving week. It would be about a 12 hour drive for us with a 3 year old and a 5 year old. We normally drive everywhere we go as “part of the experience” but idk about this one.
If you recommend flying, any tips on booking flights would be greatly appreciated.

Ive done both and for us, the decision comes down to three factors
-are you staying on site or off
-how long is the trip
-hoes does the financial repercussions of flying impact the rest of the trip (does it mean you won't get Genie + or have to cut park days, etc)

Disney is about 10 hours from us. Went last week-first week of November-December 2021. We flew with our 2-year old. Never regretted the decision and would do it again in a heartbeat.

IMO, the biggest factor would be the 3 year old and if you can get a direct flight. If they have never flown before, and considering the youngest age, I would not fly unless it's a direct flight
Also, you know your kid better than anyone, would they be able to handle waiting for the plane, taxiing, the flight, taxxing again; and then repeating after the trip. Then magnify all of this if they are potty training
I have done the drive a number of times (9hrs disney, 10hrs Gatlinburg) and the key for my family was doing the bulk of the driving over night. I would rather start around midnight and have them sleep 6-8 hours. Stop somewhere for breakfast and find fun activities for them for a few hours. I do all the driving, so the wife tries to occupy them so I can stretch out and try to get a quick 15-30 min power nap. And plan the rest of the drive to have you near the location around lunch time.
EVERYONE will be cranky that first day if you drive from the excitement, pent up energy from the drive, most likely skipped naps....So adjust accordingly
Edit: Major factor for us is we don't want to fly with mask restrictions with the young ones. Youngest will constantly pull on the mask bc she thinks we're playing peak-a-boo when we have it on, and we don't want to end up running into an flight attendant that just doesn't understand

Skip it and go to Gatlinburg.
I have business in Orlando from time to time and I cannot imagine how Disney is fun. Hours of lines and traffic for a couple afternoons of the mouse? For that kind of money? No thanks.

No way I would drive that far with young kids.
Some people I know of seem to set themselves up for a bad trip when they drive there and try to cram too much into a short amount of time.
Some baws don’t have much time off of work and they damn sure are going to get their “money’s worth” while at Disney. Leads to some cranky arse wife and kids

It really depends on your family and if you can get a direct flight or not. It was 10 hrs for us and we decided to drive because by the time we got to the airport, connected at another airport and waited for a shuttle at Orlando,’ the flight was only going to be a couple of hours quicker…if there were no delays.

Why should I piss off? I’m just telling the truth. The worst thing is kids crying on an airplane. Next worst thing is parents taking kids to restaurants and thinking it’s a play ground and let their kids run around like crazy. My dad would turn my butt black and blue if I ever did that. Plus my parents know airplanes are no place for any kid under 5 so we didn’t fly. We drove everywhere until I was 7 and then they said we could fly if we behaved but if we didn’t the whole e would always drive everywhere. It’s called being respectful to others. But then again just watching people from Louisiana drive I understand you always value yourselves above others so why think of others flying

We took the family and drove to Disney/Universal this past Thanksgiving, 9 1/2 hours . Left super early they slept most of the trip. Loved having our own car with us. But they liked universal better and so did we

By the age of 7 my daughter had stepped on two other continents and seen probably a 8 or so different states.
Your narrowed vision of how thew world should operate based on how you were raised is short sided and not helpful.

It says a lot about your parents and you if they didn’t think you were potentially capable of behaving on an airplane until age 7. You should be embarrassed to tell people that.

For us it comes down to price. It’s about an 8 hour drive which isn’t bad. We have gone to a beach before to break the trip up but that was for shorter trips. If you can get a good deal on a direct flight arriving in early afternoon do it. If your kids haven’t flown before then they will love it unless masks are a big issue. Hopefully that goes away. My kids love flying and do very well. The Orlando airport is awful though and security lines can be an hour or more some days. So when picking a flight to come home think about that.

Depends on what airport you can fly out of. IF you can get a direct flight straight to Orlando or not. I know you can fly from MSY to ORD for dirt cheap usually.
If you are staying on site, they'll charge you for parking anyways, so the transportation from the airport cost is a wash.
