This post will be a joke to all TD Real Men, but it’s a legit question for me. I’m not really a handy or DIY guy and I need a fence put around the backyard of the place I recently bought. Would y’all recommend waiting until lumber/labor start coming down or will it not make enough difference so that it’s better to just go ahead and do it? Not talking about acres here, just a regular city lot.

Damn, man.

Do you have to finance it? If yes, then no don't build it.

Do you have to dip into emergency savings for it? If yes, then no don't build it.

Can you pay for it out of pocket even with the elevated cost of goods and not be bothered outside of being mad at this administration for creating the circumstance for you to have to ask this question? If yes, then yes build it.

If you have the money and need it just build it. There is an opportunity cost in not having it.

Yeah I can afford it out of pocket, I’ve just had a lot of other expenses lately with the cost of buying the damn house itself and wouldn’t mind getting a better deal on something if it was going to come down a lot within the next year or so. I’m guessing it’s probably not worth the wait though.

I build fences. The last one was 20% higher just on materials. Your looking at about 30$ per ft right now.

Fence materials will be 15% less in a month and much lower in 3+ months. Wood is staring to fall. 1000 board foot price is now under $900 and coming down from the 1350 high a couple months ago. It takes a little while for those prices to hit the stores.

Just get a German Shepard and equip him with a invisible fence collar. Get a buddy and nobody on your lawn.

I have gotten a $26, $27, $28, and $29 quote for my fence. Go out and get quotes and tell the fricken contractors you are doing that so they make their quotes reasonable. I literally had two of them ask me what the other quotes were so they could either match or beat them. No, just give me your best price and I will tell you if you have the job or not.

I was in the same situation a few weeks ago. We just did a home addition and have a toddler who loves playing outside so we needed a fence to keep him contained. 430' of fence was getting quoted around $16,000. I ended up going with privacy in the front half of the yard and chain link in the back while doing it myself. Cost of all materials and equipment rentals were $7,400. I had to opt for 8' pickets because I wanted our fence to be closer to 7' tall. Also went with metal poles over wood 4x4s. If you went with wood poles and 6' pickets you could save a bit.

It took me two evenings to dig and set poles, a full day to run the 330' of chain and another day to knock out the rails and pickets for the privacy. I did the privacy without any help so it can probably be done a bit quicker. I am planning on finishing building the gates this weekend. Its not complicated work just very labor intensive which is why you pay so much more to have another person do it.

The hard truth is the cost of materials just adds up. Metal poles were $35 a piece. Top rails were $12. Quickset concrete was $5 bag.

I am not sure where prices will be in 2023, but even if wood prices go back down, the utility of having the fence now was worth the increase in price.

My fence came down during Ida. Well most of it did. A little over 200 feet. I said well I guess I’ll just replace all 300 feet of it then so it’s all fresh. Got quoted $26/ft. I put the fence back up between the neighbor and I and I never replaced the rest. No chance I’m paying $7500+ to change it all. I kept the chump change that insurance paid me and I’m moving on.

I'm handy enough but too old to build a whole fence, maybe a little bit of fence, but not a lot. Ida destroyed our 12 yo fence that I had put off replacing for 2 years due to high costs. Insurance was very little help. It was time to bite the bullet. Our new fence cost $14k in December 2021 (550 linear feet).

Get three or more estimates, and pick a middle guy with good reviews. We used Harris Fencing, very good work. We had the cash avilable but found nearly free financing through SBA - yes, SBA does provide financing to homeowners in certain cases, and not just disasters. Check to see if you qualify, you may be suprised.

ETA - we financed in December 2021 and paid off in March 2022, total charge was about $40. I never lifted a hammer lol
