Sacramento Republic just made the US Open Cup final

Beat Sporting KC 5-4 in pens.
Dude for Sac pulled a panenka to tie it at 4 and then Zusi's 5th pen was saved.
Kind of nuts.
First USL team to make the Open Cup final since 2008. They'll face Orlando.

Sacramento republic is a legit favorite to be an MLS expansion team

They should have been picked up for expansion well before Charlotte and others
But those other clubs got the franchise fees paid
The league will probably be done adding teams for a while
It’s already massive

Love to see that the guys starting the NOLA USL team started them. Shows they are setting up class organizations.
With that said, they are about to get all this smoke on September 7. Vamos Orlando!!! Flights from MSY are only $76 roundtrip, so seriously considering taking the trip.

Meh, not compared to other US leagues and realistically, still far less teams per capita in USA/CAN than in Europe. Keep expanding to 32 to make it easy for 8 regional conferences. Sure some teams get played more but you already don't play every team in the league as is, so might as well make it easy on the players/fans and have more local games. The current conferences are still huge. You can be LAG and have a game in Texas one week, home, then in Canada the next. The US is just too big for that type of schedule.

28 teams is huge
It’s basically one of the biggest leagues in the world, it honestly might be the biggest first division
You can’t compare it to other American sports leagues bc they are the best in the world or are the only in the world. It’s an Apples to Oranges comparisons.
Not good for a league that struggles with squad depth and the best American players out of the academy systems leave first chance they get.

You can definitely compare it, and what I said about distance still stands. PL teams probably have an average travel time of less than 2 hours the whole season. MLS teams probably have an average time of over 5 hours. It beats the shite out of the players. More teams mean more regional games. It will keep the fans interested and willing to travel and will keep the athletes from fading hard at the end of the season.

I know you know that would be the English system if they were starting it today…

You say this a lot but it’s a worldwide sport and squad depth has become less and less of an issue as the league continues to churn out academy players and attract promising young players from South America and even Europe now. A big part of Seattle winning the champions league was their depth.
Also the notion that young players are jumping ship asap isn’t entirely correct, either. Some go abroad quickly, sure, and players who dominate the league like Aaronson should challenge themselves in Europe, but you also have guys like Ferreira who know MLS is better for him at 20 and by 21/22 he’ll be in Europe. In either case, the league is succeeding at producing national team players and it’s only continuing to improve. Philly and Dallas are talent factories and teams like Seattle, DC, NYRB, NYCFC, Orlando, Houston, San Jose, SKC, LAG, and LAFC have upped their game.
I’m not going to pretend to know the ideal number of teams for a country of 330 million people, but the growth of MLS has clearly been a net positive for the league and for the national team.

No it wouldn’t
The only ones who would agree to it would be the scum bag American owners wanting a closed system
Which is bad for the sport

Depth is still a huge issue, especially in the midfield and defensively
I’d say attacking wise it’s actually pretty deep bc the league has focused on bringing quality DP attacking players which makes it exciting but also exposes the levels these guys are about the defenders.

I agree but dudes bolting in their early 20s still hurts the league with home grown produced talent staying in MLS. It’s great for the national team and MLS owners selling but not so good MLS squad wise.

If it was the most popular sport in this country a huge league would work great. But it really is too big especially with no pro/rel. It encourages shite owners to be shite with no penalty. The domestic talent pool of good quality players staying in MLS just isn’t there.
The strides MLS had made improving its quality is making other countries in our region a lot better.

I’m ok with this setup actually. It leads to higher scoring games, which is perfect for a sport looking for increased traction. I for one am ok with MLS developing in the mold of the Eredivisie, seen as a good stepping stone league for promising players that is adept at youth development.

This is the major downside to no pro rel. I hope it eventually becomes the norm, but I don’t see how you get the league owners to agree to it. I think the USL set up will be the first to do so, with its current championship/league 1/league 2 organization. My hope is that it becomes popular enough that MLS is forced to integrate into their model. I’m not sure how they do it without some major outside influence.

Why would what USL does have any impact on what MLS does?

It would only be championship and league 1 for pro/rel.
USL 2 is basically the equivalent of summer baseball leagues for college players. There are no professional contracts with the majority of the rosters made up of out of season college players and dudes who are looking to get noticed again after flaming out in championship or USL 1.
A lot of the USL 2 teams/cities would be in no position to suddenly flip to a full professional schedule.

The only way I could see pro/rel ever happening is
1) MLS decides they have maxed out their expansions
2) MLS brings USL under the same management (would be hard to have USL teams have different roster financial rules than MLS teams)
3) Something insane like an 8-10 year heads up that pro/rel is being instituted.
You think that team always on the back end of the standings is going to put millions into a new stadium if they think in the next couple of years they could be in the USL? No. But a good long decade heads up will allow teams to sort out their financials and make long term stadium decisions. Consider the MLS TV rights are close to 275m a year and USL is like 2m. It could really damage the viability for some teams to see a dropoff of 10 million dollars plus in income a year, especially when sorting out contracts.

It will only happen if someone above MLS forces it on them
And MLS is almost big enough to not worry about anyone above them

MLS will be pushing to be the 6th best league in the world by 2030. I could see them want to be considered a top destination for all those who want to be in those leagues to go and prove themselves. Pro/rel may be the last straw to get Europe to finally accept the MLS as a good product.
Also, I recently saw some fans from SA countries complaining about MLS swooping up a lot of their young talent away from their leagues. That is great for MLS. It's not a given that Brazil will be the best league in the western hemisphere indefinitely. They will be caught and passed in the next decade.

Don Garber is that you
It’s not even better than the Championship, don’t see it adding that kind of depth in 8 years.
