I’ve seen the show and liked it a lot (until season 8 of course) and was wondering if it’s still worth checking the books out? Any opinions here?

The first three books are among the best I've read in fantasy, with the third book being one of my favorite books of all time. The fourth and fifth books are pretty average though.
But,I wouldn't start it at this point because the chances Martin finishes writing the series is pretty much nonexistent. If he ever finishes the last two books read the series then.

They’re really good but it’s been years since the last one came out and he still has to release 2 more. I have 0 interest in finishing the last 2, I can’t even remember what’s going on

I’d say read the first 3 books for sure .
I highly enjoyed all 3 and GoT is the only fantasy series I’ve ever read .
I stopped there and am content with that choice

Would yall recommend a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms instead?

As much as it hurts me that the main story will likely never be finished, I'd recommend reading every single thing GRRM has written in the ASOIAF world. I just enjoy them more than any other fantasy books I read. Books 4 and 5 get way better on a second read. The history books are fun easy reads. Dunc & Egg are great.
If you enjoy the world, I think it's still worth it even though the story will likely remain unfinished forever.

I’m reading through fire and blood right now and loving it. But I’m gonna stop where the series picks up, don’t wanna read ahead. Thinking of getting dunk and egg for when I stop it

He hasn’t finished those either.

There is literally no chance whatsoever that he will finish. I think he knows it and has given up. He's old and rich beyond his wildest dreams now and enjoying himself.
Still a lot of it is worth reading, anyway.

As much as I love the series I would recommend not reading it. There is so much setup that will never be resolved, and you are setting yourself up for serious frustration.
Put it this way: are you ok with starting a novel and stopping 70% of the way into it and never finishing it? If so, then read the books; if not, then save yourself a lot of time and frustration.
If you read the books, you will dislike seasons 6 and 7 as well.

I got bogged down about 75% in the third book. Still pissed about the show.

Much better if you read the chapters in order using the boiled leather guide

I found the last quarter of Storm of Swords to be the opposite. There's stuff going on everywhere in the story. It was hard to put the book down. It's probably the best part of the whole series.

i imagine someone will come along after he croaks and finishes the series. probably will be better than if he finishes it himself.

I will finish it. I have a few white papers to write for work that are occupying the reading space in my brain.
ETA
I also got distracted by Fire and Blood and got about 30% into it. Too much to read.

I won’t start the series bc it isn’t finished. Maybe Brandon Sanderson will finish it up like he did wheel of time. That’d be rad.

Sanderson needs to finish up the stormlight archives first..
I just read where the Next Book n the series The Five Nights has been pushed back to 2024..

I'll never re-watch the show but the books are still %100 worth reading imo. I've read them multiple times.
Im done with reading fantasy stories that aren't finished because of GRRM, but man I do love ASOIAF. Even not being complete. If he dies before he finishes, which he will, I'll be disappointed, but I can appreciate the first five books as some of the greatest fantasy books ever written on their own without a conclusion. I actually really enjoyed book five, a good bit more than book four.
If you're loving Fire and Blood you should read ASOIAF. If you're ok with it not being complete.

I recently finished re-watching of "GOT". I decided before I started watching "House of the Dragon", to read the books from the beginning. I'm about to finish "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms". What is the best book to read before I watch "House of the Dragon"?
