Common sense thread, but holy cow soft drinks are a major crutch to living a healthy life

I’ve always been somewhat fit. Never worked out, just had a very high metabolism. I could eat taco ball every day and not gain a pound.
After graduating college, getting a desk , getting married, having kids.. well, it started to add up. I have had 1 coke in the past 3 weeks and I’ve lost 9 LBs. Definitely not at my goal weight (people laugh when I say I need to lose weight), but it’s scary how bad that shite is for you.
I’ve tackled soft drinks.. now onto the unhealthy snacks and then getting into a structured health / cardio / workout routine

It's literally the definition of empty carbs
Good for you man

Yup, there's 240 calories in a 20 oz coke. I know people who drink 2 per day then complain about not being able to lose weight.
When I was on Adderall 15 years ago I think most of my calories came from coke.

It’s not the calories. It’s the 134g of sugar in those 2 20oz cokes.

His point is 240 calories isn’t bad for you, 134g of sugar is.

After I graduated college and got my job as an ER tech, I drank 3 mountain dews a day during my shifts. I finally kicked that terrible habit once I got as big as a house and I lost 10 pounds in a week

Substitute beer for soft drinks and that is my main obstacle dropping bodyfat.

My crutch is peanut butter. I'm an addict with the stuff. One spoonful and it's on, I'll eat 1000 cals in 30 seconds.

its pretty funny. people will tell you all day that drinking beer is a good way to get fat while pounding a coke 4-5 times a day. i think most people just dont think or realize how many calories they contain.
it blows my minds when i see people drinking those big arse mega fountain drinks of the stuff.

Mingo's point is the sugar doesnt matter, its the calories that do. in the end only things that matter are calories and protein. rest is up to the person on preference, atleast in terms of fat loss.
in the end soft drinks are fine if they fit in your overall macros....problem is...they wont for anyone that isnt adderalled out.
in the end soft drinks are bad because they become a huge crutch with tons of calories that provide no nutritional bneifit. And in todays world, no reason everyone shouldnt be atleast switching to zero versions of the drinks.
OP great job bro. keep it up.

My wife and I were breaking our fasts for a while with tortilla chips dipped in peanut butter and honey. It's really really easy to intake way more calories than you intend eating that crack.

"Soft drinks" are the worst. I limit them to special occasions only. But I can never do the "drink zero calories" thing. I love milk and beer too much. I also like a pineapple juice or powerade towards the end of my workout. I know, the sugar in powerade is just as bad as a soft drink, but when timed right I believe those carbs are beneficial.
Now if I could just tackle my ice cream addiction...

Quit drinking soft drinks back when I quit smoking. That was 20 years ago. Haven't had a Coke, Sprite, Pepsi, etc in all that time.
Beer is my vice, but it's way more fun than soft drinks!

I used to drink enough Dr. Pepper that I should have been gifted stock options. During a good day of college football I could put away a 2L with a pizza by myself. Amazing I never got overweight from that.
About 15 year ago I gave up all soft drinks completely. Well I might have one 2-3 times per year but that's it. They're literally poison and the "sugar free" versions are even worse.

Is a diet soft drink an ok substitute or are there other concerns with those?

Very incorrect.
Not advocating someone drink a ton of them, but the zero calorie versions are literally just sparkling water with food coloring, some flavors, and aspartame.. they are a fantastic option for getting that soda hit without adding calories. One or two day is totally fine.

Diet is definitely better. But I'm not sure about 1 or 2 a day.
I know the data is still inconclusive but ingesting shite made in a lab daily isn't something I would tell someone to do. 1 or 2 a week maybe.
