Take all the Beatles’ albums and Dark Side of The Moon and arrange them in a list best to worst. Where is DSOTM on the list?

I don’t think I understand the question. I mean I know what you are asking, but I don’t get it. What would make you ask this?

I think sometimes it's best to rank things into tiers rather than a straight list because they are equally brilliant but different in style and era. A number of Beatles albums fall into this top tier (Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers, Abbey Road) as well as Floyd albums (Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall). If I had to rank them i would put it after Abbey Road and Revolver and on equal footing or better than the others. I wouldn't have a problem w/ someone thing Dark Side was the best though. It is really exceptional.

Just a thought exercise to see how the quality of the album stacks up against the Beatles’ best.

it'd be up near the top for sure. It'd be up near the top compared with any band in history's catalouge because that's how classic and timeless of an album it is. It's a bit different than what would also be at the top for the beatles so I think making an actualu list order comes down to either your musical tastes or your particular mood.

Most of the Beatles albums from when they first really started shifting musically due to drugs (revolver, sgt pepper, white album) are still kind of the type that include some nice fun short singlaongs that you could pop in on a roadtrip and sing along too. Sure ther'es some trippier type ones as well but most of those albums are pretty "normal", I guess you'd call it for lack of a better word.

Dark side is quite a bit different. It's very compact with only 9 tracks, several of which have no vocals. It's way more ethereal and isn't really a "fun singalong" kinda thing like many of the beatles ones listed above. It feels FAR more mood/ambiance/music related comaprd to the others.

Abbey Road is probably teh closest comparison I guess I'd make just as far as the overall "FEEL" (totally subjective btw, not stating as fact) from start to finish. And of course abbey road is a masterpiece.

So to answer the questin...I can't really say it'd be "Number [blank]" but I absolutely think it'd be extremely near the top.

I’d put this over any Beatles record.

Abbey Road/Pet Sounds
Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band/The Wall
Rubber Soul /Dark Side Of The Moon

Subjective opinion on my part. But any alternative arrangements of these are easily justified.

Really a great topic. Nice.

are you trying to ask us if Pink Floyd's DSOTM is better than albums by The Beatles?

If so, then yes.

That was one weird long and winding road you took to get to such a simple question. Sometime people really overthink these threads.

I'm not the OP, but...

it seemed pretty simple what is question was and it's not what you typed. His quesiton pretty much boils down to "pretend DSOTM was a beatles album. Where would you rank it alongside other beatles albums". Not "is DSOTM better than any beatles albums"

It apparently wasn't so obvious and simple, but my question of his OP was:

I specifically left out the word "any," which you took the liberty to insert. If you want to play the semantics game then it's probably wise to make sure you are playing it correctly, dawg

Did any of the Beatles albums stay on the billboard charts for 950week in a row?

Sgt. Pepper’s and Dark side are two of the finest psychedelic albums ever made. I’d put them in the top 5.

In 1990 my apt. was broken into and someone stole all my CDs. Those were the first two albums I bought when rebuilding my collection.

In case you were wondering, 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit and Blues for Allah by the Grateful Dead would go with them. It’s hard to make a firm top 5 or top 10 because there are multiple competitors to narrow it down even if you’re not necessarily picking one over another. Joe’s Garage by Frank Zappa and Bitches Brew by Miles Davis are both in the top 10 and both deserve to be in the top 5 so you see the problem.

That’s a nice, detailed and insightful way to say Apples and Oranges for people that hate to reject comparisons on that cliched basis.

For me I’d put DSOTM above every Beatles album because I don’t like the Beatles.
I could probably try to be objective about it but it’s too much energy. Haha!
