Inflation turned higher to start 2023, as rising shelter, gas and fuel prices took their toll on consumers, the Labor Department reported Tuesday.

The consumer price index, which measures a broad basket of common goods and services, rose 0.5% in January, which translated to an annual gain of 6.4%. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for respective increases of 0.4% and 6.2%.

Excluding volatile food and energy, core CPI increased 0.4% monthly and 5.6% from a year ago, against respective estimates of 0.3% and 5.5%.

While price increases had been abating in recent months, January’s data shows that inflation is still a force in a U.S. economy in danger of slipping into recession this year.

That has come despite Federal Reserve efforts to quell the problem. The central bank has hiked its benchmark interest rate eight times since March 2022 as inflation rose to its highest level in 41 years last summer.

Nonsense.

Brandon just told the nation while giving a speech that the economy is better than ever and inflation has gone way down. I’m just January alone, over 500,000 new jobs.

He straight up said look at how the economy was when he got it.

I mean, if you can’t believe Brandon while giving a speech on tv, then who you gonna believe?

Biden got his little victory lap for his SOTU, but the people still suffer.

Said it before, the only place inflation has fallen is in the white house.

The entire Federal government is tone deaf and corrupt. Don't believe you lying eyes is Lieden's mantra.

Yea it's higher

Also, January 2022 inflation was around 7% too. Just based on the numbers they claim that is over 13% in two years.

Even that is insane but we all know it's higher. They have messed with the numbers no doubt.

Well, the job market is really strong right now. That's part of the reason inflation won't drop.

I’m so pissed at Trump and his mean tweets because that’s what caused the fraudulent election results.

The "Inflation reduction act" is the same kind of mental gymnastics commies use for things like "the great leap forward" or the "cultural revolution" where their words are literally the opposite of what they say.

I don't believe ANY number put out by our gov't. They are all proven to be false over time. All of them.

Excluding the two most important things in people’s lives and still rising

The state of the union makes more sense now.

lol

Jobs were really strong under Trump and yet I don't recall inflation numbers like this

It is definitely the job numbers, though, and not at all the trillions of dollars we keep printing.

I'm pissed at Trump bc he gave away free money (lol) and now our economy is fricked bc of it. With the help of Biden, of course.

They're like the tag team of the US government. One is in office and fricks you, then the next comes in office and keeps fricking you. Doesn't even have the common courtesy to use lube, smh.
