The Pelicans are picking up Naji Marshall’s $1.8m option, source confirms. Decisions still coming on team options for Herb Jones and Willy Hernangomez and Jaxson Hayes’ qualifying offer.

Herb’s option is definitely getting picked up, Hayes ain’t worth his QO and Billy may want a fresh start.

The New Orleans Pelicans are declining forward Herb Jones’ $1.8 million team option for the 2023-24 season, which clears way for Jones to be a restricted free agent and for the sides to work toward a long-term extension, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.

The Pelicans have not picked up the team option on Willy Hernangomez ($2.6m) and did not extend the qualifying offer to Jaxson Hayes, sources tell ESPN. It's still possible Hayes and the Pelicans come to an agreement later but they did not extend the $7.7m qualifying offer.

Marshall is a solid end of bench guy on a bargain deal. No brainer.

They can pick up the option and still do an extension. Picking up the option doesn’t stop that from happening.

I think you’d rather have his new deal start now though as opposed to 2024

Probably would rather it start in 2024 when we have Jonas as an expired contract. Having it start this season would push us into the tax unless we shed about 14 million or so.

If we decline herb's option we can sign him to ~50/4yr starting this year. That would be a steal but herb probably wont take that as he can wait and get more next year

I roughly did the math. you can sign herb and stay under the tax if you dump kira, waive temple and billy and replace them with EJ, karlo, and a vet min. probably not the best option since you'd have to rely on 2 rookies and a vet min to provide good depth but brightside is you get herb on a steal of a contract

but...he'd be playing one more year at less than 2MM. never know what can happen in the NBA (or life)

How much do you think he can get? You think he's worth more than that?

If he waits a year his max is 71/4 if what i'm seeing from Shamit on twitter is correct

Yea, that's the tricky part. We can start it now at 4/$50m and obviously lose some flexibility this season but get him locked in at the cheaper rate.

If we wait til next offseason to lock him in, I think he can get over $70m, obviously assuming he plays well this season.

There are pros and cons to doing it either way. I'd like to see us lock in the 4/$50m this offseason and then use Jval to try and tweak the roster, though I wouldn't hate just basically bringing the entire core back again for 1 more chance at it.

If he continues to improve, gets the deserved All Defense nod this coming season and even just slightly improves his 3pt shooting to 34% or so, he'll get way more than 4/50 if we wait.

Jake Fischer just said we are looking for trades to salary dump kira. This tells me they're trying to lock herb into a deal now and clear kira's salary to stay under the tax along with waiving temple and billy

That’s not at all what he said. This is what he said

Another item to keep in mind for New Orleans, the Pelicans are looking into trades for Kira Lewis Jr., sources said, that could provide the point guard with options for greater playing time elsewhere.

That's a nice way to say they're trying to dump him. He makes too much money for a guy that will never play. Billy was begging to be traded to get more playing time last year and they didnt move him.

It's a shame Lewis didn't work out. It can't be a fit issue, since Alvarado is similar in size/traits (speed) and plays a great deal. Lewis just never caught on for some reason..

Sounds more like they want to trade him for something useful than an actual dump.

Small guards are a dying breed. I mean scoot had size concerns and he's taller and weighs 30 lbs more than kira
