Someone help me with the decline on Herb’s deal.

Why wouldn’t we pick up an option for that cheap for our best defensive player who is only getting better and better. I can’t fathom them being ok just losing Herb. Is there something in the works for a new deal? Sorry if it has been covered I just haven’t had the time to keep up. Herb is a cornerstone of this team. Losing him completely changes the team’s outlook. If anyone deserves a good new contract it’s Herb. He plays the game the way you want all your players to play it.

Yes. They wouldn't have declined the option if they didn't have a framework in place.

They 100% have a deal lined up they will pay him more now to lock him up long term for most likely less money than if we waited. Free agency “starts” at 5 so you will hear it not much later than then

We turned down his option so we can pay him now as a RFA. This is probably the cheapest timeframe to get him on a longterm contract. Waiting another year will probably cost more.

Good. I don’t want to lose this kid. He has his head on right, is humble as hell and he works his arse off. He still drives his old car from college to save his money. This is the type of player you reward.

Hopefully someone doesn't throw a bag at him and we can't afford to match

Save us 20 million potentially

It's a bit of us taking a gamble and Herb playing it safe. If we picked up his option and his game continued to improve, then a new deal a year from now might be much more expensive. On the other hand, he could struggle with his 3-pt shot, get injured near the end of the season, and see his market hurt.
So, it makes sense for him to go ahead and lock up the $50+ million now, as this is his first big paycheck. It makes sense for us too, to avoid giving him a $70 million deal next summer.

I covered this in the other thread. So we give him 4 for 50 now, or wait a year and give him 4 for 71. But if yiu add the year for only 1.8. It’s really a 5 year 73 deal.
We’d actually be better having him for 5 just for a bit more since the csp will be going up every year. Doing it the way we are will actually cost us more money in the long run and really hurts our flexibility this year.
