Son's birthday, he wanted an upgrade from his basspro blackmax baitcaster reel and rod combo. He pond fishes a bunch in neighborhood etc.

I bought him a Shimano SLX DC 150 reel. What he wanted, i don't know much other than i know shimano is a good brand and i have a few spinning reels.

I need to buy him a good rod to compliment. Need advice on brands, length etc. Want something nice to compliment a nice reel.

What’s he slinging in those ponds? If spinnerbait get him a falcon med action 7’ boocoo from academy. Think they run around $70-$80

For pond fishing probably a 6’ 6” - 6’10” med/heavy with fast or xtra fast tip.

Anything around 7’ tall plus or minus a couple of inches is fine. Medium heavy is the most common action and it most universal for different baits. Shimano makes an SLX rod that’s right at $100 that’s good. Almost every manufacturer now has a 7’ tall med heavy rod for $100 or thereabouts. Might be best to just ask him what he prefers.

Go to Academy and get a Dobyns Fury 734c. He will be happy and an all around great rod.

Dobyns or shimano in 7’ MH fast action, prettymuch a do anything rod. The exprides are awesome rods and chegs usually has them 30% off.

I love Shimano. I've got a couple baitcasting rigs that are 40+ years old out there, still slicker than owl poop.

All the Shakespeare rods used to be made in my hometown of Prosperity, SC. I used to grab the seconds ... they made great rods.

Ha, yeah, I know Davy. Took him fishing when he was only 12 down at what used to be Boyd Morrison's Landing at Black's Bridge on 391. His Dad is a good guy. Davy actually lives not far from there in Saluda now. I recently saw him covering a tourney up around the Great Lakes, on Eerie .... my boy Grant was kicking arse and taking names that weekend.

I'm in the minority on this but I prefer 6.5-7' medium, not medium heavy for bass. Especially for a younger kid, it's going to be harder to get much whip on a MH with a light bait. It's also more forgiving if the fish tries to throw the hook.

I fish with my cousin and he prefers a broom stick, and we both catch fish. It's personal preference but for most bass fishing MH is an option, not the only option.

It’s all personal preference but aside from that, one brand’s medium heavy is gonna feel like a medium to others.

That said, medium heavy will give him the option to throw frogs, which every kid should be chunking around a pond.

I just got my 12yr old that fishes some local neighborhood ponds with friends for bass, catfish, Sacalait, and occasionally sling some trout, reds and flatties. I ordered him a Cajun custom 7ft Revenant Series rod medium / fast tip. He loves it because its his and kinda unique. He has been hammering fish with it. he bought his own reel with his birthday money and gift cards. he carries that rod and a KastKing Ultralight on his bike, has his Frogg Togg Backpack tackle bag, with a hydration bladder i got him, and they fish for hours.
