Searing with a Pellet Grill

I currently have a Recteq 380 Bullseye, but looking for something bigger with the sear option. I don't hate the Recteq, but I haven't had great support with their customer service, and no matter how often I clean the grease out, it still catches on fire if I go above 350 degrees.
The three current grills I am looking at are:
Pit Boss V3 1150
Pit Boss 850
Oklahoma Joe DLX 900
I'm leaning towards the Oklahoma Joe. Can anyone let me know pros/cons of each if you've owned them?

I make it a practice to put mine on riot mode at the end of a long cook to burn it out, not sure if that's what you mean by catches fire...

I've got the Pitt Boss Pro 850 and opening the sear grate and then closing it again to finish the grill works as advertised. Very happy with mine

I've had that Oklahoma Joe model for probably 3+ years. Does everything great and I have had zero issue with it. It will sear, we use it a lot for pizzas. I've had it over 750 degrees before when you open up the sear portion of the divider and crank it up, the grilling grate and divider is literally glowing red. Here lately it seems harder to smoke at lower temps like 225, I may need to clean it out or see what is up with that but it isn't something I can't work around. I do two medium sized turkeys at a time at Thanksgiving and they always turn out perfect. I have cast iron flat griddle I throw on it for smash burgers with onions and buns, etc, does a great job on that. It's really is like having 3 different grills in one unit. Sometimes it sucks not having all the fancy wifi / bluetooth stuff on it but then again that is just less stuff to go out, I've bought remote probes to be able watch temps from inside the house. The thing is heavy duty for sure, nearly 200lbs, being able to empty the hopper out is nice. Overall I'd give it an A+.

I smoke stuff a lot. If I want to sear something, I just light the Blackstone and let that bitch get smoking hot. Reverse seared ribeye for father's day. Smoked for 30-40 minutes on my Camp Chef and then to the Blackstone.
My uncle has the V3 and loves it.

I have a 2nd gen pit boss pro 800 something that I've had for 5 years. On a typical week, I cook on it 4 to 6 days a week (primarily carnivore diet), and it'll sear just fine. Occasionally it has had a runaway fire when on the 500* setting and it had to automatically shut itself off, but overall, very pleased.
Mine is at the end of its life. I've cooked hundreds upon hundreds of meals on it, so I'll probably go back with the same thing since it ain't broke and in need of fixing.*
*That assumes pit boss has fixed their temperature dial to go to 275*. Mine goes from 250 to 300, which is egregious because 275* is a must-need temperature for smoking meats, especially ribs.

I set my pellet grill to 500 and put a cast iron griddle in there for 20 minutes. Does a perfect sear on beef or blackened fish.

Go get the RecTeq 700 or bigger.....
I have had mine for 6 years and zero flame outs or any issues.
The smaller units all have that problem, no matter the brand.

Get a Masterbuilt 1050. Cooks with charcoal instead of pellets. You can layer wood chunks in the charcoal. Computer controlled temp just like a pellet.
I’ve had the temp as high as 750 to quick sear steaks.

I recently bought the Oklahoma Joe canyon. It’s a charcoal smoker on one side and a gas grill on the other. I’ve used it 4 times and, while it’s not the unit you’re looking at, I can attest to the build quality.
I had two pit boss up-right smokers. Both had several issues. I wouldn’t recommend them.

The Comp Series goes in 5 degree increments now. Pro series does 25 degree increments.

Every grill will do this if you don't clean it out after every slow cook under 400. I had the 800 and it would catch on fire too oh and as soon as it does that it will destroy the thermocouple that tells the temp on the grill. It's not a bad replacement but it's dirty.
You just need to turn your grill up to it's highest setting after every cook to cook off the small amount of grease instead of accumulating it. Sorry to rob you of a new grill, but the curved pitboss grease tray thing is a bitch to clean and get out every time which is why mine rarely got cleaned and would flare up.

I've got the Cabela's Pro Series 36" Pellet Smoker. It's got a plate that you can slide off of the top of the burn cup and sear with it. I really like it.
Cabela's Pro Series 36" WiFi
It's plenty big enough for a brisket or a couple of Boston Butts.

Literally the same concept as a pellet grill, and will also catch fire just like a pellet grill. Build quality was a lot worse than my pit boss.

I never hardly clean the grease out of mine and it’s never caught fire

look in to Grill Grates, they do a great job of getting that sear on steaks
