My last red snapper trip.

Yesterday I went with my neighbor 40 miles off shore of Port Aransas. He has a 37 foot contender with 3 300 hp yahama engines. A real performance boat. The seas were steep. Snappers have difficulty chasing the bait up and down 10 feet with the swells. Took us 3.5 hours to collect the bag limit of two per person plus the ride out and in
I have made the trip many times and I always ask myself why suffer the abuse. This time I think the answer is no more. My but cheeks hurt from trying to hold on to the seat. Legs hurt from the stress.
About half of the snapper were in the 15 pound category . Thats good, but at age 76 its time to just go to the fish market.

Never enjoyed the offshore thing. Pulling stuff off the bottom with heavy tackle. Give me inshore with light tackle every time.

You can use whatever tackle you choose...

Maybe just go on days where it’s not rough.

I don’t even bother going if it’s anywhere near rough.
2 foot seas is about my limit. I ain’t that mad at them snapper.

He’s 76. Good on him for going whenever he can.

My offshore cat hasn't been past the jetties this year, missed a couple of short windows on some weekdays but it's been a rough go of it so far this year. Should start to flatten out in the next couple of weeks.

I’m half your age and honestly I’ve lost my anger at the fish when it’s more than 1-2s.
Offshore in the spring and fall when the weather is nice, the seas are flat, and no other boats in site just a peaceful day on the water is absolutely amazing.
Running home at 2pm in the summer in 3-4s tired as frick and having the sun kick your arse is just not that fun anymore.

Bottom fishing kind of sucks…just my opinion though

I'm blessed to have a friend with an off shore boat. He has also added two electric fishing reels. It kind of feels like cheating, but it sure is nice to drop deep, push a button and drink a beer while the reel does the work.

Mine spends more time in the diversion as it does the Gulf.

You lasted longer than I did, man! I am 60 now and called it quits on the offshore trips last year. I have a ton of fond memories from that, but it just got to be too hard on me. The heat coupled with fighting the rough seas just got to where I wasn’t enjoying it anymore.

I only go bottom fishing once a year with a group I have been going with for years. Its simply not worth the effort. Too much fuel and to small a limit for me to be interested. I go offshore as often as I have opportunity but dolphin, kings and sailfish are far more fun to catch and do not cost as much. If bottom fishing species seasons were in synch it'd be different but closing triggers and almost all grouper during the snapper season means a lot of fish being caught that have to be released and most of them do not make it back to the rock. Maybe not most but enough that it is a waste. This is on the Florida Gulf Coast....do not know about other areas of the gulf.

The last 4-5 snapper trips I have been on (one a year with a regular group) we have caught better quality fish on LIGHT tackle....10 pound spinning rods. The problem is that any undersized fish which have to be vented and returned after being caught on that size tackle is far less likely to survive without taking the dolphins and sharks into consideration. I enjoy jigging a bunch but it also means a lot longer fight for the fish.

This is another issue with short snapper seasons....some folks will push the envelope when conditions are dodgy because they only have so many days during the season to get offshore. I have no data at all but I bet snapper charters go out today in conditions that they would not have gone out in the 70s. Probably a lot smaller boats today also...

In parts of the world where limits are not as ridiculously low as they are in the US it is a blast to go winching. The problem is that more than about 50 feet deep, any short fish or fish caught out of season has to be vented to release, especially as fast as they come up on an electric reel, and venting allows them to swim away but the data suggests that's about the extent of their life. Many studies conducted have concluded that it only works about 75% of the time when executed to perfection and perfection is hard to come by in most instances.

I hate pulling up a red snapper that has one of those parasites on its tongue. Can't get the wife to eat it after she sees the parasite. called cymathoa
