So I play in a group with some old guys every Saturday at a local course. Normally we have a two to three groups of players that tee off one after another, but this time we only had two groups of three.

One of guys in our threesome normally carries an oxygen machine around to help him breath when he gets really winded and tired throughout the round. Unfortunately, he forgot to charge his machine and was struggling to finish the front 9. Around hole 7 he tires out and heads home for the day leaving our group with only two players.

Now, its log jammed on Saturday morning. Group in front, group behind, no one playing through. So at the turn, we run into the marshall on hole 10 and ask him if it would be ok for us to group up into a 5 some to keep the pace of play going since our 2 some would be waiting on every shot and the group behind would be waiting on us every shot. Marshall said as long as we didnt hold up anyone, he would look the other way.

So we join our groups on hole 11 and continue playing. By hole 15, the group behind us finally caught up as we are putting on the par 5. They wait for us to finish on the green, then after we tee off on 16, one of the guys behind us drives his cart across the fairway to "reprimand" us on playing 5 and that he was going to call the marshall and that his group is always waiting on us every weekend. Basically venting his frustration he had been harboring for years playing behind our slower players.

At this point, I tell him to go back to his group and thank him for his concern. He loses his temper and I chewed his arse right back and sent him packing to his group. They dont catch up to us on hole 16, and we finish the round without them having to wait another shot.

Now these guys that play behind us are old timers too, teeing off from the reds, driving up on the fringe and acting like they own the fricking place every weekend. Real pieces of work. And to me, they were just waiting for a chance to talk shite and us grouping up allowed them that opportunity. They had a point, but they couldnt see that us playing a 5 some was faster than us split into two groups, especially when we only had the back 9 to play.

So how would you have handled this situation? No grouping up and make everyone wait or group up and accept the argument?

Tell him go ahead, we talked to the marshal and he said it was ok. If you wanna bitch, I’m sure he’ll listen.

Then drive off.

I'm convinced there's a segment of older golfers that don't even enjoy playing golf. More concerned with their time around the course than hitting golf shots and enjoying the day.

I told him to call the marshall, but didnt throw the marshall under the bus for letting us group up. Marshall gave us one of those, you didnt hear it from me, speeches when he gave us the OK on hole 10

Marshall came up to us on hole 17 and asked us to break up into two groups bc the guys behind us called and complained. We didnt, of course, as it would have delayed the round even longer for everyone.

Round took around 3:45 minutes for us to complete if that tells ya anything

So they were bitching about nothing.

Figures.

I’ve had a few tell me they want to play through, I tell them no. If someone is waiting on me it’s because I’m waiting on someone else. Generally tell them to call the marshals or bitch at the group 3 holes ahead, we’re all waiting.

Nobody I’ve ever played with plays faster than I do. Thats a lot of people over the last 50+ years.

Whiney bitches just get worse as they get older. Their golf was bad before, it’s worse now and they just look for something else to blame it on.

Play your game and don’t worry about it, if necessary just be a better a-hole.

Why are men playing from the ladies tees? Red tees aren't for men, I don't care how old you are.

Get back surgery, arthritis and thow in a case of plantar fasciitis, then tell me what tees you enjoy the game more from.

I used to hit it 300+, I’m old now so 230 is a good one.

I can’t reach a 450 yard par 4 in 2, 380 if I don’t hit it good might be a long iron or a hybrid. Some older guys struggle to get home in 2 if it’s over 320.

Play your game, don’t worry about theirs, plenty to keep you busy there without adding to it.

I'm an older golfer who plays fast. My first thought was why are old retirees playing on Saturday morning when the courses are packed? When I retire I'll be playing Tuesday -Friday and doing some fishing or other things on weekends. Courses are miserable on the weekends with so many new players. I need the Saints to start winning so people watch/go to the game and midday Sunday rounds are a breeze again.

You responded perfectly, in my opinion. I’m not sure why old guys seem to be in such a hurry. As long as your group was within one hole of the group in front of you, they had no legitimate gripe.

It's not just older golfers. There are plenty of young jerks playing golf that feel entitled as well.

Covid brought in new golfers that don't understand proper etiquette on course.

this is a belief held by the young. Once you get older and you see the effects father time has on your body, you get it.

Also, I think the group has an age requirement for which tees you go from. 65 from the gold and 75 from the red. Double bogey is the worst score you can take on a hole. Two dollar buy in. Point system

Cant tell you how many times the oldest, slowest player in our group rakes in the cash

I completely agree. I’m not a fan of growing the game. To be honest majority of golfers don’t know proper golf etiquette including the people who’ve been playing prior to Covid. But the old retired entitled golfers at the courses are the absolute worst. And stories like the above are a prime example of the ridiculousness you find at some of the golf courses.

Break it up with 2 holes left What a joke.

I've been playing golf since I was 13 and can't remember having a confrontation with someone once. Yet every day on this board something is happening.
