ETA:

DEADLINE: You said this morning that you thought Joker 2 was going to surprise people. I gather the sequel is just as dark, if not more dark, than the first one…

ALBERTO BARBERA: It is. It’s a continuation of the story but the film is completely different from the first film. If you’re expecting the same in terms of violence or other things, you’ll be surprised. When I saw the film in LA at the beginning of February there were four or five of us in the screening room, including writer Scott Silver, and we were astonished, our mouths were open at the end of the screening. It is a darker film.

DEADLINE: And it is a musical…

BARBERA: It’s a dystopian musical, or a musical of sorts. I think it’s one of the most daring, brave, and creative films in recent American cinema. And I think it really confirms Todd Phillips as one of the most creative directors working at the moment.

The resulting wild brew made the prospect of a second film compelling to its leading man. “It’s the only way that I can do any movie,” Phoenix tells Empire in our world-exclusive Joker: Folie À Deux cover story. “If it doesn’t feel like it’s dangerous, if there’s not a good chance that you’re gonna fail spectacularly then... what’s the point?” His director concurs. “That was literally the reason to do it,” says Phillips. “The only reason Joaquin would even do a sequel is if it felt frightening to him. One thing he really got off on on the first movie was this fear, every day, this nauseous fear of like, ‘What are we fricking doing?’ He did not want it to be easy. And he wanted to feel as scared on this one. He goes, ‘Well, if I’m gonna do it, I just want to feel that it could not work.”

I'm intrigued.

Also...I do like how Lady Gaga is making the character of Harley Quinn her own and isn't just doing an imitation of the voice actress from the animated series.

Lady Gaga is one of the better singer-actors, she's really good on screen

Making this a musical is a poor choice IMO, and I say that as someone who thinks choosing Lady Gaga is a great choice for going that route. I just think the musical aspect of it will lose me.

But I am also in the minority who thought the first Joker was pretty overrated (I liked it well enough).

While I have no interest in watching this, I do at least respect what they're doing. Joker was lightning in a bottle that they'd never be able to recreate. By going radically different they'll at least avoid accusations of being a cheap knockoff.

Give them credit they’re definitely trying to go in a very different direction. It’s hard to make a musical cool nowadays

Haha i feel the same way.
The trailers have been great, and there isn't much "musical" to them. I think when they call it a musical it just means that Joker/Harley are going to be peforming a show a few times in the movie. I don't think the whole movie is going to be a musical, or even half of it.

Agree. It's nice to see creativity back in movie making.

Hell, it's hard to do anything new or cool with a superhero/supervillain movie. Credit to them for swinging for the fences instead of just giving us "Joker Répété"

We've had sci-fi series with musical episodes (Buffy, Legends of Tomorrow, ST Strange New Worlds), but to take up an entire film in a franchise is pretty ballsy.

I think it'll be like a star is born, not a full musical like Chicago.

Closed captioning revealed an interesting character. Also loved seeing Brendan Gleeson as the Arkham guard.

I agree. Because it's a musical I'm not really anxious to see it.

Looks promising- still confused about the "musical" aspect. It can be done well (Chicago and Cabaret for example) but I'm worried it's just going to feel completely out of place
