Batman: Caped Crusader Episode 1

Just watched the first episode and I’m not sure what to think yet. At this point I was expecting them to lean into the 1940s vibe and setting more, but this seems like a watered down version on BTAS.
The color grading is VERY dark, and I was struggling to see some aspects. Took me a few minutes to realize that Barbara Gordon is black.
The gender swap of the Penguin is just bizarre, and the writing is not on the level I thought it would be for what is being sold as a more adult take on Batman.
Batman voice actor sounds like a young Kevin Conroy and was good. Overall animation just feels very stark and like ‘70s Hanna Barbera laziness.

Bruce calling Alfred “Pennyworth” seemed out of place.

I liked the noir throwback elements but the writing still needs work.

It's mostly an odd decision.
I'd get it if Batman never had any good female villains, but honestly the BEST female villains are basically Batman villains:
Poison Ivy
Harley Quinn
Catwoman
The only thing I can think is that because all of them (the first two recently, Catwoman further back) eventually became more or less "anti-heroes" instead of actual villains, and rather than create a new female villain they just changed the Penguin.
It feels kinda lazy.

So they made a fat white woman a bad guy? That’s actually surprising.

Seriously, Batman has lots of great women villains. In addition to those listed you have:
Talia Al Ghul
Lady Shiva
The Phantasm
Copperhead
Tigress
Babydoll
Red Claw
Penguin is one of the most male piggish characters in all of Batman, so why gender swap him when Batman has all sorts of wonderful women villains?

Watched the first episode. Super strong start to the episode, beautiful animation, great fight scene, perfectly dark Batman. Then Penguin shows up in full view and it screeches to a halt. Minnie Driver’s voice doesn’t fit the hulking character that they drew. They’d have been better off drawing her thin or going with a husky voice actress (with a lower, menacing voice). Other than that it would’ve worked. Looking forward to having a well cast villain. The black character updates worked fine. Driver’s voice killed the chances of a female Penguin passing muster.

But that's the beauty of all the best villains. They have redeeming qualities. They are 3 dimensional characters.
Even when you look at some of the male rogues, you have a lot of people who are "bad" but only because they are broken...
Mr. Freeze and Two-Face both seem like decent guys that life just screwed with.

They're really going in deep with the race swaps. In a 2024 setting you can buy into that mythology but in 1950's America you wouldn't see so many minorities in such prominent roles. The times were very different then.

The Joker being the notable exception... you need at least one "pure evil" villain.
I agree with your sentiment, but while both Mr. Freeze and Two-Face are tragic villains, they never really graduate up to "anti-hero" like the others did. Red Hood went from hero to villain to anti-hero in a very compelling story arc, but mostly what drives that transition is the fandom.
Catwoman, being Batman's love interest (his most common one) needed to either move up to that status or eventually it was just going to get absurd at the idea of them being romantic.
Harley Quinn grew in popularity, and coupled with the abuse at the hands of the Joker, made her an easy pick for graduating to anti-hero.
Poison Ivy probably doesn't make the same jump if not for her association with Harley, but she did.
Even Talia gets the treatment sometimes, depending on the story, thanks to trying to break away from her father (like the Tower of Babel storyline).

And they gave Gordon and Barbra darker skin.
But over all I really liked how the show is set in the 40's with noirish undertones and art deco style.
Executive Producer is Bruce Timm the man behind Batman the Animated Series so I knew going in that this would be good. I'm only two episodes in and so far so good.

Can someone give me the Ciff's Notes on why this is airing on Amazon and not HBO or Max? Kinda seems strange to have a show with one of your big properties on another network....
