Joaquin Phoenix has dropped out of Todd Haynes‘ untitled gay romance film, just five days before filming was set to begin in Mexico, Variety has confirmed.
Phoenix had developed the screenplay for the detective love story with Haynes and Jon Raymond. A source close to the production tells Variety the actor got “cold feet.” Entire sets had been built in Guadalajara before Phoenix made the last-minute decision to exit the film.
Hinged on Phoenix’s casting, the movie, produced by Killer Films and backed by sales agent MK2 Film, had already sold to international distributors ahead of production. Sources tell Variety the project is in peril, indicating that Phoenix’s role cannot be recast. The crew is now out of work, and stakeholders in the film still need to be paid. Losses could exceed seven figures.

Speculation among the crew is that Phoenix’s exit had to do with the graphic nature of the film’s sex scenes. But that theory is confusing to some sources, who reiterate that it was Phoenix who brought the project — and its NC-17 concept — to Haynes in the first place.

Don't think I would've been watching that anyway.

You can write about it in your diary all you want, but no one can really be faced with the reality of sucking a dick until its in your face.

Yeah, that would have been as much a no-go from me as was "Brokeback Mountain".
I have absolutely no interest in seeing 2 guys getting intimate and apparently Joaquin did the crawfish walk when it got to crunch time.

may just have to delay shoots a little bit but they can find someone to cast on short notice

and its NC-17 concept
I mean don’t blame him but what was he thinking to begin with

Hollywood is so desperate they're resorting to gay porn.

I spent this long and the only thing from brokeback I've seen is the " i wish i could quit you" meme
Nobody but gays watch gay movies. They can try to normalize it all they want, Male on male will still be off putting.
Also... if everythings ready to go outside of the lead actor... cant they just take half of whatever he was getting paid to hold over staff while they find a no name to replace him?

Joaquin saved them a fvckton of money if the movie is canceled now vs if they’d spent all the money actually making it. There would’ve been eight figure losses in that scenario.

He's going to have to come back and do something extra super gay now.

It will be interesting to see if something really scandalous comes out about him soon.
