Taylor-Johnson stars as Sergei Kravinoff, also known as Kraven The Hunter, in the film. Kraven is among Marvel’s most iconic and notorious antiheroes. In the comics, Kraven has encountered Venom, Black Panther and many others as well as being one of Spider-Man’s best-known and most-formidable enemies.

The film’s official synopsis reads: Kraven the Hunter is the visceral, action-packed origin story of how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven, a man whose complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared.

Teasing the film at this year’s CinemaCon, Taylor-Johnson confirmed the film would be R-rated, telling the audiences: “Will it be rated R? F*ck yes, it’s going to be rated R.”

This is why they need to mature Spiderman a little bit. The teenager thing has been done to death.....you can't put a teenage Spiderman up against this Kraven. There would just be no chemistry.

Expectations are through the floor.

Knowing Sony, this R rating is a reactionary afterthought triggered by Deadpool success.

They describe Kraven as an anti-hero, similar to Venom. Wasn't he a full-blown villain in the comic? He apparently is an animal preservationist in the movie, while he was a big game hunter in the comic. I also don't recall him having the ability to control animals in the comic. He looks great in the trailer, although it appears that he won't wear his signature costume much in the film.

This is what I didn’t understand either. The man is a hunter. His garb is the fur of his prey. He was no fricking conservationist and if this movie goes south Sony will rightfully be blasted even more by fandom and maybe they’ll give him to the MCU.

Hollywood can't glorify hunting or the wearing of fur. That would be against the message.

Would be interesting if it was good but I doubt it will be. I don't think Kraven is interesting enough to be a title character.

This shite is dumb as hell and makes no sense. Taking Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, turning them all into anti-heroes and then having them fight Spider-Man’s B-list villains.

Looks like it has the potential to be pretty awesome, but Sony doesn't give me much faith.
I'll definitely be looking forward to watching it.

Sony has already used Rhino in The Amazing Spider Man. And technically Kraven is a Villain as well.

And as long as they can keep the rights by having a movie in development, they're going to keep pumping these out. They will eventually have a movie based solely on the Spiderman from the daily newspaper comic strip at some point.

I would not be surprised if they make more money getting Disney to pay them to be able to use characters than on actual box office for these movies.

Problem is movies tank and then Marvel doesn't want to go anywhere near that character anymore.

Honestly Sony should stick to comic book movies as animated films, they clearly suck at the live action films.

He's a villain though. He should do villain things.

I agree, but the Spiderman and venom films have done really well for them. It's just morbius and Madame Web that were huge flops. We'll see how this one performs.

All correct and it's a huuuuuuge opportunity missed.

Kraven was a bit of an early Punisher type (early Punisher was a merc who hunted whomever for the highest price, he studied his target for weeks before taking an actual shot at them). Being the world's greatest hunter, Kraven decided that he needed a real challenge and nothing presented a challenge to the level of hunting and defeating Spiderman.

If you want to make some crunchy-granola movie about "save the animals" or somesuch with the character, that could work but you have to start him at his origins (you know, the thing that made him worth fighting Spiderman to begin with?) and then bring the audience with you on his journey from predator of animals to predator of those who prey on animals.

Part of the fun of having an anti-hero is the transition from villain or hero to that place of nebulous morality. For something like this, it's not as fun for the audience as there's no change in the character (at least from what we see with the trailers) and when they are centered around a topic of some controversy and they stay only on one side of it then the movie comes across as merely a vehicle for preaching.
