Realize I'm late to the party but stumbled upon this show on Pluto last night. It's hilarious. Pretty well known cast in Jason Segel, Seth Rogen, James Franco, and the kid from Waiting.

One of the best single seasons of TV ever. Sad it never got another season but for a show that didn't get renewed, it has a fantastic ending. I used to re-watch it almost every year and debated starting it last week. I probably will soon.

Bump this once you get to episode 16. It is as good as TV gets imo.

We keep coming back to this one and Firefly.

What were the suits thinking when they cancelled these 2 shows? They were clearly destined for greatness.

SO I remember a buddy telling me a while back why it got cancelled, and it seemed weird (he was wrong), so I just googled it. Turns out yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the premiere and the new york times had a piece come out today with an interview from the creators and some of the cast. Crazy timing of this thread. LINK Pretty good read. There are actually quite a few new articles coming out today because of the anniversary.

From a different article...

quote:

The critical reaction was nothing short of ecstatic, and though there was an audience — several million on any night — it wasn’t big enough to satisfy NBC, which lobbied for the characters to “win” once in a while. “We were telling really unconventional stories where the victories were so small they could be confused with not actual victories,” Kasdan recalled in 2013. But notwithstanding from the show’s approach, its chances of developing a larger audience were undermined by the network changing its time slots and repeatedly pulling it from the schedule, for the World Series, November sweeps, the December holidays and February sweeps. It was on for two weeks, off for three, on for three, off for eight, on for five, off for four, on for two, and then — with the episode “Chokin’ and Tokin’,” in which Bill’s peanut allergy puts him in a coma and Lindsay gets paranoid trying pot — it was gone with the wind.

It had no chance and according to Apatow, everyone on set knew it fairly early on. SO they put everything they had into making 18 great mini movies. I didn't realize the whole season didn't even get to air. It was cancelled before some of the best episodes. Only 13 episodes aired.

Love the cast. Joe Flaretty was absolutely perfect but comedically the mom was terribly misused.

Long story short, I saw The Who on that tour in Atlanta. That's what made this show so awesome!

Hell YEAH, I relate to it!!

Great show, real bummer it was a one and done but obviously the legacy lives on with that cast

There’s what I would consider a spiritual sequel series called Undeclared you should check out after. Most of the same cast and the writers / production, just basically a college version that’s half hour episodes and not quite as sentimental / emotional as Freaks and Geek. Also stars a very young Charlie Hunan

The real question is, which one is the bigger cancellation travesty?

I would say Firefly because I think that one could've gone 6-7 seasons, easy but Freaks and Geeks had a higher peak.

ETA: Interestingly Rashida Jones' character in Episode 4 of Freaks and Geeks is named Karen.

Love the show and it kills me that I didn't know about it during its run.

I grew up dead set in that time frame and can relate to those kids SO much. The Geeks I mean.

And Bill Haverchuck is the GOAT of the show in stealth mode.

This scene alone shows how damn good an actor Martin Starr is.

AND, this scene is great too

Youtube Link

AND that gets me to thinking about another awesome show that was ended too soon. Men of a Certain Age. It only made it 2 seasons but dammit it was good.

Maybe because it came out when I was that age so just like Freaks and Geeks, it hits home for me.

The cast was fantastic with Ray Romano in a serious role as a dad strugling with a divorce, kids with their own issues, and the pressures of running a small business. Scott Bakula of Quantum Leap fame plays a c-level actor who's best days are behind him. Then the sleeper star, Andre Braugher as Owen, the son of a famous and successful ex-sports pro and owner of a car dealership who struggles under the shadow of his father.

The cast and crew could tell that season 2 was going to be the last so they ended it well. Kinda like F&G.

Yep. It feels like a continuation. While not as good, I enjoyed Undeclared.

Bill was definitely my favorite. Can't believe the show only made it 13 episodes on air. So anybody who watched the show never really got to see any Bill redemption. That's what makes the spin the bottle episode so good. Because prior it was just 15 episodes of poor Bill just never getting a break.

Started a rewatch. Man this show is so dang good.

Was in tears in bed watching the episode last night where Kim has Lindsay over to meet her insane family. Basically using her so her parents don't take her car away. When Dad came chasing them out and beating on the car and rocking it with Lindsay inside freaking out I was dying. Then at the end Kim and Daniel had a knock down drag in front of Sam and Lindsay's straight laced parents the first time they met them. Man, forgot how funny that episode was.

I just started a rewatch.

Gotdammit I can’t believe they canceled this show.

The first episode is gold.
