Wait, not a bar. Your house. What is your advice for this guy?

Keep your pistol on your night stand and have an AR/shotgun nearby, under the bed or in the closet.

AR would be my choice.
30 rounds with fast reloads is better than 7 or eight at the most.
AR also easier to shoot follow up shots faster and more accurately.

A pair of double barreled 1911's is the only correct answer here.

Is it worth spending $700 to suppress the AR? To limit muzzle flash and concussion?
Is your significant other going to be able to operate the AR well?
Should it be 9mm instead of 5.56?
Should it be pistol-length or is maneuverability not really a concern?
I’m just trying to think through all this given where we might be headed and actually, where we might already be.

I think I would almost rather the immigrants get to me than have to shoot a short barreld AR numerous times inside of a house!!
Unless someone has practiced with a semiautomatic a lot they can be difficult to operate under duress short stroking the bolt or accidentally hitting mag release.

1. Guard dog
2. Alarm system
3. Short barreled shotgun loaded with #4 buckshot
4. A good cleaning service

Ruger 1022 with multiple loaded magazines in close proximity of your person. Gunshots are gunshots, nobody is sticking around to verify if it’s rimfire or centerfire bullets being propelled in their direction.

#4's are a lot better than 00 buckshot
Give me #6 shot all day long.
At 15' there isn't much difference between buckshot and birdshot.
Both are very lethal at 15'
At 30' birdshot won't be going through your kid's bedroom wall.
I'm not talking #9 birdshot, but the larger shot.

Does standard birdshot penetrate fewer walls than buckshot or slugs?
Short answer: Yes. In informal ballistic testing through standard interior home walls consisting of 2 panels of sheetrock on a 2x4 frame, #8 birdshot goes through one wall. Still, not two, and #4 and #5 birdshot go through two walls but not three (at least while retaining lethal velocity on the other side).
On the other hand, multiple tests have shown that both 00 buckshot and standard 1-ounce Foster-type slugs easily penetrate four entire sheetrock walls and retain lethal energy on the other side.
If you live in an apartment building, your home is close to neighbors, or you are concerned about your loved ones or pets being harmed by missed shots or over-penetrating projectiles. A shotgun loaded with larger-sized birdshot can be an appropriate choice for your home defense shotgun.
This is a photo of bird shot at 10'

Should it be 9mm instead of 5.56? why not both? I have ARs in 8" .300blk to 22" 6.5 CM and have 9mm in APC and SP5K
Should it be pistol-length or is maneuverability not really a concern? I know the layout of my house. Intruders don't. In the dark, they won't see me until it's too late

Not saying I fully agree, but there is something to the idea of just having your self defense be whatever you can employ effectively.
A 10/22 goes bang every time and is relatively easy for anyone to shoot.
Paul Harrell was a treasure.

In this video, 22Plinkster tests two types of .22 Long Rifle ammo, seeing how far a .22 LR bullet will pass through sheets of 1/2"-thick drywall. He shoots CCI Velocitor and CCI Stinger ammo types from both a pistol and a rifle. The results may surprise you. Shot from a pistol, the CCI Stinger ammo penetrated Nine (9) drywall sheets. Out of the rifle, the CCI Velocitor Ammo passed through Eleven (11) sheets, while the CCI Stinger stuck in the eleventh board, after passing through Ten (10) sheets.

YES…shooting inside a house, especially at night can blind you and the unsuppressed concussion of the rifle barking lead hate is not a one way thing.

I would prefer a 9mm carbine over an AR inside a house.20 gauge short barrel shotgun with #5 or #6 shot.
Ruger 9 mm carbine-have models that accept Glock magazines.

I have it on good authority that gun-shy wives like to shoot this more than an AR-15.
It also cycles hollow points better than AR-9s, or so I believe at least.
Only problem is see with it is that it’s so heavy.

Ruger model 19130 with Magpul stock weighs 6.2 lbs (unloaded).
They also have the PC Charger with 6 in barrel weighs 5.2 lbs, again unloaded.
I have a Beretta CX 4 carbine,little over 5 lbs.Handles very nice.It’s what I use to shoot hogs in a trap.

You may want to trade that buckshot out for #4 or #6 shot. If this happens inside a house, it will be at very close range and the size shot won’t matter if the perp is inside 15 yards. The reason you’ll want #4 or #6 is if you have children in other rooms so that the Sheetrock will slow it down and not harm them. In the heat of the moment, you won’t have time to worry about what’s on the other side of walls.

A loud-barking, medium/large breed dog, exterior lights, and a conspicuous alarm/camera system stops something before it even starts. No one will come to your house not expecting trouble or repercussions if this is in place.
After that, whatever you are most proficient with will be best. All the fire power in the world doesn't make a bit of difference if you don't know how to use it proficiently. You need to practice like your life, and the lives of your loved ones, depends on it. Because they might.

44 mag wheel gun.
You wont need more than the 6 it holds. When that loud arse gun goes off inside a house they will scatter like the roaches they are.
And a side bonus, if you catch them stacked up coming through the door one round will take out 3-4 of them.
