AR would be my choice.
30 rounds with fast reloads is better than 7 or eight at the most.
AR also easier to shoot follow up shots faster and more accurately.

Is it worth spending $700 to suppress the AR? To limit muzzle flash and concussion?
Is your significant other going to be able to operate the AR well?
Should it be 9mm instead of 5.56?
Should it be pistol-length or is maneuverability not really a concern?
I’m just trying to think through all this given where we might be headed and actually, where we might already be.

I think I would almost rather the immigrants get to me than have to shoot a short barreld AR numerous times inside of a house!!
Unless someone has practiced with a semiautomatic a lot they can be difficult to operate under duress short stroking the bolt or accidentally hitting mag release.

Ruger 1022 with multiple loaded magazines in close proximity of your person. Gunshots are gunshots, nobody is sticking around to verify if it’s rimfire or centerfire bullets being propelled in their direction.

At 15' there isn't much difference between buckshot and birdshot.
Both are very lethal at 15'
At 30' birdshot won't be going through your kid's bedroom wall.
I'm not talking #9 birdshot, but the larger shot.

Should it be 9mm instead of 5.56? why not both? I have ARs in 8" .300blk to 22" 6.5 CM and have 9mm in APC and SP5K
Should it be pistol-length or is maneuverability not really a concern? I know the layout of my house. Intruders don't. In the dark, they won't see me until it's too late

Not saying I fully agree, but there is something to the idea of just having your self defense be whatever you can employ effectively.
A 10/22 goes bang every time and is relatively easy for anyone to shoot.

YES…shooting inside a house, especially at night can blind you and the unsuppressed concussion of the rifle barking lead hate is not a one way thing.

I would prefer a 9mm carbine over an AR inside a house.20 gauge short barrel shotgun with #5 or #6 shot.

I have it on good authority that gun-shy wives like to shoot this more than an AR-15.
It also cycles hollow points better than AR-9s, or so I believe at least.
Only problem is see with it is that it’s so heavy.

Ruger model 19130 with Magpul stock weighs 6.2 lbs (unloaded).
They also have the PC Charger with 6 in barrel weighs 5.2 lbs,again unloaded.
I have a Beretta CX 4 carbine,little over 5 lbs.Handles very nice.It’s what I use to shoot hogs in a trap.

You may want to trade that buckshot out for #4 or #6 shot. If this happens inside a house, it will be at very close range and the size shot won’t matter if the perp is inside 15 yards. The reason you’ll want #4 or #6 is if you have children in other rooms so that the Sheetrock will slow it down and not harm them. In the heat of the moment, you won’t have time to worry about what’s on the other side of walls.

You wont need more than the 6 it holds. When that loud arse gun goes off inside a house they will scatter like the roaches they are.
And a side bonus, if you catch them stacked up coming through the door one round will take out 3-4 of them.
