General's promotion blocked in first sign of Trump retaliation for Afghanistan pullout

A Republican senator has blocked the promotion of a general who oversaw troops in Kabul during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, according to a Senate aide.
The move by Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin follows threats from President-elect Donald Trump to fire senior officers and officials who oversaw the chaotic pullout from Afghanistan in 2021. It also comes as Trump’s transition team weighs possible court-martial proceedings against current and former officers involved in the withdrawal, as NBC News previously reported.
Army Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue was nominated for promotion to become a four-star general and to oversee U.S. Army forces in Europe. His nomination was among more than 900 proposed nominations sent to the Senate but Donahue’s was put on hold by Sen. Mullin, according to the Senate aide.

Put him in GITMO, in a cell

This is good.

Just to clear the air here, the generals planning the withdrawal were told that they had a limited number of troops and that necessitated the choice between evacuating from Bagram or Kabul. They literally did not have the resources they needed To do the job correctly, and compromises were made. Tactically, leaving those 13 service members exposed was a critical mistake, but if you want to blame anyone, blame the Milley, Austin, and joint chiefs for not standing together and telling the state department and everyone else that they could go have sex with themselves and they would handle the withdrawal.

No way this guy should get another star.

Why didn't they threaten to resign once POTUS ordered them to execute a plan that they knew could not work?
This guy should be investigated. If he failed to voice any objection, then he is a coward who deserves nothing. Giving him another star would be a slap in the face of every Veteran and their families.

To me it's all about the intelligence in the 5 months before. What did the IC and military intelligence assets tell those in command. This large group just didn't show up one day at the airport. We had forces to slow them down. Why didn't we use them.

I still want an answer of who in the military signed off on abandoning Bagram air base because the administration decided they could have that or an embassy and chose the embassy.

He is one of the 5 RINO's exposed in the never Gaetz stuff.

Not retaliation, basic accountability.

IIRC, that was a state department decision. There was no way they could have gotten the friendlies out from Bagram due to threats from the Taliban advancing.
They never should have evacuated Bagram until after the diplomatic personnel were out. That way, they could have provided support from outside the wire, and took the pressure off. But no, thank your state department…

Irrelevant. A General officer or three should have either resigned or been fired over it. The State Department's opinion shouldn't have mattered.

Good, failures should not be rewarded.

They screwed up by not keeping Bagram. That was a mistake. Most of that fiasco could have been avoided if they hadn’t given up control of that airport

Tactically, having bullshite rules of engagement when the Marines had eyes on target for nearly a day and with intel saying something was up was gross negligence and dereliction of duty on the part of the chain of command at absolute best.

Yeah, that’s easy for you to say. Without giving too many connections away, let’s just say I know some of those involved in the planning, and they didn’t have any say in the decision. As I said, thank your state department. Anthony Blinken is a total failure.

From my perspective, as someone who did two deployments as a HUMINT analyst in the army with a TS clearance, our intelligence apparatus is so much more vast and sophisticated than most anyone knows. I can tell you for a fact it wasn’t some kind intelligence mistake

I don't know if the ground force commanders are free from blame but your larger point here about Milley and the JCS is a good one. They were 100% derelict.

We can all agree on this. Anytime State is involved in these type of things FUBAR is pretty much a guarantee.
