Lofts seem to be going down year after year

I know they say, “uh, well, the loft is less, but our design gets it up in the air so good that the loft must be decreased.”
At what point do wedges go below 40 degrees?
I saw a set with standard specs of 41.5.
That is a 9 iron by any reasonable standard.
So now we will carry 7/8/9/pw/gw45/gw49/sw54/lw58
It just seems like over marketing to dial the lofts down and call it some sort of “advanced technology.”

I used to have Titleist AP2’s that were I think 2012-2014? I now have Callaway Apex 19’s. They are delofted, my PW is the loft of my old 9 iron.

Come on man you know you want a brand new full set of irons: 8,9,P,G,A,B,X,Y to combine with your three wedge set. I can hit my 15* 8i 220 yards. You’re behind the times gramps.

Higher launch keeps it reasonable for most people.
But this comes down to the gap between really good players and really bad players and the customer base being mostly bad. If you’re really good, you can find the players’ irons that don’t remove that much loft. You are more aware of your gaps and what you need.
Having a PW go 165 isn’t viable for most good players at most courses they play. But that same club will go 145 for a bad player who would normally only hit it 120. It’s helpful.

I’m doing my part for the gap.
I evidently like to “use the ground.”
I find that hitting the ground first takes a little off so I can keep it in front of me.
So if I’m uphill 113, I take a 9 iron and fat it- keeps it below the hole.
However, my ball speed is often in the high 170s with a Lob wedge, if I am 5 yards off the green.
No one can deloft a club like me in those moments. Shaft lean be damned, I’ll use the blade. Even urethane covers fear my wrath.

Putting people on the launch monitor in a shop and having them hit their 7 iron 10 yards farther sells clubs. It is what it is.

It is what it is. I'm in Titleist T150 irons, which leads me to carry 2 "gap" wedges. PW is 44° and I carry a 48° and 52°. However, my longest iron is a 28° 6 iron, which is my 190 club, but it flies higher than any 5 iron I've ever carried at a similar loft.
In fact, all of my irons fly higher than any previous irons I've owned, and while the spin may be slightly lower thanks to the lower loft, the descent angle provides similar stopping power.
I really don't care what number is stamped on the bottom of the club. I care that I have a club that flies the distance I need it to.
EDIT: On the flip side, I have my 10.5° driver cranked up to 11.5° and am hitting the ball further than I have in my life. Started playing at age 18 and I turned 48 last weekend.

I’m still playing MP 32’s. 7i is 35 degrees and PW is 47.
I play a Mizuno Pro 223 4 iron which is 22 degrees. So if you want more old school lofts in a modern tech club, Mizuno pro 223’s aren’t too bad.

Does it really matter maker?
Need to sharpen the leading edge razor sharp. Bet half the ball lands right by the cup even if the rest lands in the water.

Well, there will be a time when I need a PW at 38 degrees or a 7 iron at 28 like what appears to be a lot of people on here. I hit the ball pretty far as my swing speed is high. It also causes a lot of spin. With that being said i play Srixon ZX Forged/X7 combo. They’re slightly stronger than traditional stuff but my fitter bent them 1 deg week and even 1.25 degrees week in some. I just hope when im old and need distance irons im not bragging about hitting that 6 iron turned 9 iron 150 yards.
