Thinking Out Loud - California Wild Fires

Multi million dollar homes and businesses burning to the ground, why hasn't a self contained fire suppression system been developed? Couldn't a foam be sprayed over the structure via a sprinkler system?

The scale of these fires is way above your comprehension level.

If only they had fire extinguishing bollards in place this never would have happened

These fires are much too hot for small scale. They would evaporate those instantly.

A lot of those homes do have them.
It didn't matter.

Are you though? This is a message board. No one can hear you.

It has. Check out the Getty museum in the interactive fire map posted earlier. Now, I doubt most could afford it.

They ain't got enough water to mix with the foam.

The magnitude of the fire is too great for any sophisticated or expensive foam system
Do you realize how big of a fire they have out there?
...and that this is probably once-in-a-lifetime thing for the palisades?

do they not have pumps that they can use ocean water to keep the hydrants from running out ? I can understand more inland because of pressure drop but doesn't make any since in and around PCH areas.

NYFD uses fireboats with 40,000 GPM pumps. They sure as hell could be used for Pacific Palisades.

The whole thing seems like it's planned, produced, orchestrated, intentional- like a Hollywood movie production.

With 40mph winds with gusts over hurricane force you're fighting wind-driven embers. They're the biggest threat in these instances. Everyone sees the giant wall of flames, but those embers are what starts everything.
The solution is fire hardening areas in direct contact with wilderness. That is going to have to be the approach going forward with homes that survive and those that are rebuilt. Fire proof roofing, fencing, block/concrete homes, well managed native landscaping, and integrated or easily implemented portable sprinkler systems are all must-haves. That said, what they've had over the past two days and counting is absolutely perfect fire conditions. It is the type of setup a disaster movie would portray. It is impossible to stop the spread of any fire in these conditions with everything being perfect. It is why when similar fires happen in actual wilderness during similar setups they just let it burn. There is no containing it until Nature finally breaks.

Fire is much healthier for the vegatation than salting the earth while fighting them.

There was a video on twitter of two guys and a dog in their home with the fire suppression system spraying water, eventually the house burned to the ground.
They got out.
With the shortage of water I doubt it would work if every house started pulling from the water source.
A better Idea would be to allow the water from up north to flow south (sounds simple), say frick the Smelt Fish and maybe clear dead underbrush annually (illegal).
These are common sense though which is in short supply in California.
