I like the old school green lava soap. Works good for pine sap as well.

I like the lanolin, "waterless" hand cleaners. Melts off the grease/paint/dirt without scrubbing your skin off.

they worked better when they smelled like petroleum. last I bought was sans petrol and didn't work nearly as well.

I've used anything with pumice when working on vehicles with old, thick grease. The abrasive works well. For lighter work, such as an oil change, a non-pumice hand cleaner worked fine for me. Not partial to any brand, but the last I used was Gojo and Goop.

We are in the heavy equipment repair, modification, and maintenance business and no job can be much worse for inground grease and dirt. Many options were tried but the overall winner and still champion is ERA laundry detergent. It simply dissolves the oils and grease and emulsifies them with water so that you are able to apply it to your hands, rub around thoroughly and then add a bit of water to emulsify the soap/grease/dirt emulsion and then wash the whole works off to find your hands looking great. (Works for greasy clothes too.)

They definitely aren't as good as they used to be when my old man slathered me up as a kid for the first time. The ones from the 70s/80s worked awesome. Maybe it's a sentimental choice, but I think of my dad every time I use some, and it does still work.
