It’s not about 1.5 Trillion for medical care or whatever the cause of the moment. Dems passed 13 straight single cr resolutions. This is about tanking the market. 1.5 Trillion in excess spending?? They know it’s a poison pill, and will not be agreed upon, this is about destroying the economy before midterms, only way to beat the Republicans at this moment. It’s been game planned, China is helping, too…

It's ridiculous that we don't have the ability to compromise anymore on either side. That's how we end up here.
But based on the OP, this should be shifted to the poli board.

The extended shutdown will tank markets, and that’s their goal, which is why I put it here.

No question it will tank markets, as a large portion of our economy is funded indirectly by the govt. We are not alone in that regard

Go all cash then, market doesn’t give af so far

Not shutdown....

May also be another unanticipated example of the decoupling of the haves and the have nots.
People are still trying to come to terms about how $50k cars seem unaffordable yet the manufacturers are unable to make enough of them to satisfy demand.

Like I tell employees that want to take a month off at a time. If we can afford you not showing up for a month, we don’t need you to come back after that.
F*** the government.
F*** the government.

I’d love to see someone run a model on the market to identify the line where one man’s assets should anticipate economic hardship from lack of government. The more interesting analysis…at what wealth level does one need to attain where they want want a shutdown because they’re much more profitable with fewer headaches.

When welfare money quits being sent out, you will see the democrats crumble.
Of course the Rs will probably surrender before than, as they are all pussies.

All govt should be about 25% the size it is now. govt at all levels is way to big and costly.

If anyone without the name Trump was in office they would have signed the CR .

Well that might take a while since welfare is paid for by the states.
A lot of the govt outward facing stuff is moving with unpaid employees for now. Not sure how long that can sustain.
Also contractor employees primarily run govt services, however contracts are no longer being awarded since those employees are furloughed.
Luckily the govt breaks slowly in these situations, but it definitely is hurting the businesses that rely on govt dollars to keep employees

The economy being so heavily dependent on government spending is a problem.
I won't weigh too much into the political side of things, but from a fiscal responsibility aspect, the things that have been funded that contributes 0 value to US is pretty disgusting. I pretty well agree with Trump and America First republicans on at least ripping out foreign investments with 0 return from all funding. He's over the target in this aspect IMO.
It's why so many Americans are so pissed off. You have domestic funding of jobs coupled to international waste. Local employees can't get paid because the kickback scheme from overseas "initiatives" are a sticking point. At least if they ripped all international funding and left the medicare component from Obamacare, it would at least be a little win on both sides. But, if Obamacare requires federal investment to stay afloat, it is characteristically a failure.

We are basically giving 40 billion to Argentina to prop up the peso to help swing their election. Bessent even said we are buying the peso directly. Their short term bonds hit 80% interest rates, yet we are throwing good money after bad.
We aren't done playing global politics even with Trump apparently

Are you predicting that the gov't will be shutdown for over a year? Midterms are not until next Nov. The primaries for many of these midterms don't start for another 5 months.

When it would take a spending cut of ~1/3 to all spending just to balance the budget and service existing debt, no one is going to compromise that much. Anyone voting to cut that much spending (whether at once or over time, and we don't have that amount of time) would be killing their political career and possibly put their lives and those of their families at risk.
The time where compromise could have worked was over a decade ago, but instead of compromise they (both sides) kept pouring gasoline on the debt fire.

GOP owns all three branches of government and both chambers of Congress. If they want to open the government, they could do it today by removing the filibuster. Dems play here is to not budge until 11/1 when the ACA Marketplace opens and people see their premiums doubling and tripling for 2026. That’s when people will care about the shutdown and will want to know why the GOP isn’t agreeing to ACA subsidies.
Another side of this, and why Speaker Johnson hasn’t called the House into session once since the shutdown started, is the 218th vote in the House to release every Epstein file is sitting in Arizona waiting to get seated. Convenient that, eh?
