Aldrich Ames, a former counterintelligence officer for the CIA who gained notoriety as a double agent for the Soviet Union and later Russia, has died. He was 84.
Ames, who was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole at the Federal Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland, died on Jan. 5, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed to USA TODAY. The agency's inmate database did not list a cause or location of death.
Ames has been described as one of the most damaging spies in U.S. counterintelligence history. As a double agent, the FBI said Ames had compromised intelligence operations by leaking classified documents and the identities of CIA and FBI sources. Soviet authorities eventually executed some sources.
Some think he sold out as many as ten agents who were killed. He did it for money.
quote:
Ames’ espionage activities made him one of the highest-paid spies in history, according to the Center for Development of Security Excellence. He received a total of $4.6 million for his spying.

We need to go back to executing traitors

I really can't argue this, but I have to think that his life in that max security prison was a pretty shitty experience. I think he was allowed 1 hour outside per day. I think I'd rather be shot by a firing squad.
ETA: But he deserved what he got for being a greedy prick who got sources killed.

If we start executing spys again it should be by public hanging.

Don't be so certain. The human mind adapts shockingly well. Read "Spandau Diaries" by Albert Speer. He was Hitler's official architect and later, munitions manufacturing chief. As such he was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to 20 years, the longest prison term of any German. There were crazy restrictions. No music, no talking, etc... And somehow he wrote a 500 page book about his twenty years. No, he wasn't having fun like a baw at a hunting camp, but he was living a lot better than a concentration camp inmate. I'd be he was living better than a contemporary Angola inmate only becuase there were something like 10 of them in the prison that was otherwise empty, so little fighting and such.
We are just too darn soft on murderers, rapists, and child abusers, in addition to spies.

Robert Hansenn got sent to ADX Florence. Must’ve been mind numbing hell on earth.

He passed multiple lie detector tests; he was a POS.

Surprised that he outlived Robert Hanssen.
Weird fact. I’ve had to go to Northern Virginia a lot in the past 5 years. I found the foot bridge in Foxstone park in Vienna where he hid classified material and walked the route he took back to Fairway drive on his last drop when he was arrested.
It’s a park in a very normal neighborhood. Still blows my mind that he selected a spot so close to his own house off Tailsman Dr to leave material for the Russians. He used that park and those foot bridges for years for his drops.

Yep. That is horrific but he also did horrific things and pretended it was for the good of his country.
Hanssen stopped eating and eventually died.
