Cubs Close to a Trade Deal for Marlins Pitcher Cabrera

According to Mike Cerami of the Athletic. No word yet on who the Cubs are offering.

Cubs off-season full of championship moves...

I actually like this move - hearing the Marlins will get Owen Cassie and Christian Hernandez. I like Cabrera honestly better than Imai or Gallen and I think the Cubs can afford to part with Cassie - his high K numbers and swing and miss in the zone concerned me.
Now go get a bat that can punish lefties.

It really sucks being a cubs fan. Hope this isn’t true.

Honestly, I think more Cub fans are pleased with this than not - in fact I'm certain from the stuff I've read. Apparently, you are not one of those. What is it that you don't like? Are you a big Cassie guy?

this is a big deal, this guy has High ceiling potential.
at worst, a #3, if he fulfills that potential, a dominating #1. He has to stay healthy.
I'll take this type of move 24/7, 365.

Biggest part is I’m sick of cubs being cheapasses and doing moves like this to try to cover that up. Cabrera sucks, Cassie could have been the future that ushered out a guy like Happ who is an overpriced clubhouse guy.
Cubs pay the wrong people and are cheap as hell. I give up. If you are giving up Cassie it should have been for an impact guy. Cubs can buy starters in free agency that will pan out better than Cabrera will.

Like any trade, we'll evaluate this one some time in the future and see how it pans out.

I think giving up Caissie will look bad in a couple of years.

I am absolutely frustrated by that.

We disagree on that. His stuff is better than any starter on our roster right now. His ERA last year was better by a full run that Dylan Ceases ERA and by even more than that than Zach Gallen and he has experience in the majors and a track record of some success unlike Imai. The Cubs may have loved that it was cheap, I grant you....but don't let the relative salary mislead you - he certainly does not suck.

Cassie could have been the future

I think you got that, big if is that he can stay healthy, but the Cubs pitching infrastructure has shown to be pretty successful and taking guys with some talent and finding ways to improve it.
Cruising Cub message board, podcasts and other forms of content on this, most are happy with the transaction.
Now I will add this - unless they get a quality bat - and I'll even go so far as to say one of Bregman, Bichette, Tucker or Bellinger it will be a less impactful addition. Bellinger would be the most likely of the four IMHO and for me my fourth choice, but if they at least got him I would be please and the Cubs would have about 88-90 win projection.

Certainly a concern. But Boyd had significant injury concerns going into last year and he pitched more innings last year by far than he had on 6 years. It's a risk - I agree - but there is real upside. Dude's stuff is legit.

As a Marlin fan, Cabrera is very talented. Biggest problem was he was very inconsistent and wild at times. When he was on, he was dominant.

We disagree on that.
Well can we agree on if you like this trade or not the cubs front office and ownership is dog shite?
When could the cubs have used this the most? Last year when they shuffled out an overworked bullpen and threw multiple bullpen games in the playoffs.
They needed starting pitching desperately last year when they were making a run. They did nothing and sat on their hands at the break. This guy was available and could have been had then.
Why are you now willing to make that trade, when you wouldn’t do it when your team needed a starter the most?
Because they went cheap as hell in free agency and it’s a panic move put out there for optics.

I am very frustrated by the penny pinching by ownership and the need for Jed to show how smart he is yes.

Actually we held the Brewers to 3 runs in game 5, we just scored one. But yes another pitcher would have maybe gotten us a win in game 1 or 2. I think the issue is they thought they stalled in the off-season thinking they could get their guy at the deadline but teams wanted Ballesteros, Shaw, Horton or Wiggins, some combo of that for Gore and the Marlins asked more for Cabrera last year, that's a fact and the Cubs rightly balked at that. But they should have gotten a SP last off season. That was the error IMHO. I think they got one this off-season. Now they need a real bat, not Justin Turner.

This is a good deal for the cubs. Even if they are cheap, this doesn’t reflect that

Agreed on all. The ask at the deadline last year was too much. They got a more reasonable deal this time and took it. I think most would rate it as a good deal for the Cubs.
As I suggested, IMHO they should have gotten a SP in the offseason LAST YEAR. Trade deadline last year was very tough. Several top pitchers stayed put because asking prices in terms of players they wanted in return were way to high.
In other words money was not the issue at the trade deadline, the issue was they wante Wiggins, Horton, Shaw and Ballesteros.

That's a name I've not heard for a loooong time. Let's throw in Tuffy Rhodes for old-times sake!

Yes and he was more highly touted than Cassie. I did throw in two more recent players for better context, Davis was a top 15 prospect in baseball at one point about 3 years ago - Cassie never sniffed anywhere close to that.
