Reaction videos are mostly lame or fake, I get it. With that out of the way, I was watching some reactions to Billy Joel's "Piano Man," which of course is about sad, lonely people trying to drink away their problems. A couple of Gen Z reactors drew a completely different conclusion. With bar culture mostly dead, it made them nostalgic for a place where people could gather and interact with each other. Just thought that was interesting.

Reaction videos are so freaking weird. Now the ones of music professionals doing professional breakdowns of songs are interesting and informative. But the ones of two randos in their living room pretending they’ve never heard stairway to heaven? Just really freaking weird.

Who actually watches this crap?

Lots of people inclusing me. I love them. Movies and certain songs. The drum part of Tom Sawyer is particularly interesting as is the live version of Hocus Pocus by Focus.

The only ones I like are when actual musicians do it and break down musically what they're hearing.

How did it just become such hardened conventional wisdom that they are all "fake"? I like the ones where like a professional opera singer will evaluate Dave Mustaine singing Holy Wars. I'm pretty confident that person had never really heard Holy Wars before. So what are we saying is fake?

The song is also about kinship among sad, lonely people drinking away their problems, which is not such a sad thing. Then, a talented, inspired musician also makes them feel alright. "It's sad and it's sweet, and I knew it complete..." is bound to induce nostalgia. The Gen Z reaction isn't that far from my FM radio reaction.

The other 40+ rando basement YTrs with no professional music background posting their shock reactions at music they allegedly never heard before. I agree; the pro musicians doing critical breakdowns are great. The problem is the rest of the reactionaries

If your kids haven't heard Piano Man, I've got a reaction for you.

Most of the people doing these reaction are girls or blacks in their 20s. These people typically don't listen to anything before they were born and certainly don't listen to rock. Its not hard to believe they would have never heard bands like Led Zeppelin or Metallica. That's old white guy music. You can say they overreact, and they probably do because that's what the youtube algorithm pushes, but its not hard to believe they've never heard these bands.

"You wont believe the reaction when this 60 year old white man hears "Dont Stop Believing" for the first time!"

I hate these videos so much.

The genre I've watched the most is black people reacting to metal. According to the fake theory, they really have heard all this metal all along and are just pretending? I don't get it.

They may not have been familiar with it as part of their normal cultural knowledge, but they assuredly had a few listens before turning on their camera.

I don't consider those "reaction videos"

though I admit the line can be blurred

I used to like Jamal since he came across as a fun personality. And in the case of a group like Grand Funk Railroad there's no way in hell he knew who they were before heard them, so there's no way he was faking it.

He pretty much had the same reaction I still have to this stuff.

It's usually joyful.

Don't care if it's fake - they put a smile on your face.

not a fan of “reaction” clips, but i’ve enjoyed a lot of these exercises put on by Drumeo where they get drummers to listen to songs they aren’t familiar with and have them come up with their own original accompaniment

this chick is pretty good, and it showcases what The WHO would’ve sounded like with a conventional drummer rather than Keith Moon
