It was a god awful call.

I can't believe the ejected him over his tackle, but not the Ole Miss player.
What do you expect him to do there? He was making a tackle.

Absolutely disgusting. I hope this can at least get the carryover to the next game eliminated, if not the ejection for first foul.

Sure, but by the rule it's a penalty.
The Ole Miss player was running full speed making a play on the ball and ran into the Miami player without any indicators.
The refs made the right call both times

And the refs that ESPN calls in from the booth ALWAYS agree with the call on the field.

the fact that this kid has to miss the first half of the championship game, a once in a lifetime experience, for a tackle with no malicious intent at all is insane

Nothing else Xavier Lucas could've done there. Nothing.
The officials responsible deserve 20 years in a cell with Diddy.

I think targeting is a very stupid rule. It also changes constantly, so even Lemonier on the ESPN broadcast forgot the current rule during the Ole Miss review.
Now, there has to be an indicator which is a launch or lowering the head to spear. The Ole Miss DB clearly did neither. He just ran into the guy with his head up. Lucas clearly left his feet which is a launch.
By the current rule, they got both calls right.

But it’s not a “launch” in the sense of malicious intent.
Trying to officiate tackling, which in itself is high speed violent collisions, is just so absurd.
Running full speed and trying to take a guy to the ground is always going to be forcible contact… he went low to get leverage to take a receiver down, his feet leave the ground because he’s running full speed and then has to pull up and dive to make a tackle. But because the receiver falls down low it’s “targeting” and that’s a “launch” … but if the receiver is just upright catching the ball that same “launch” is just a tackle.
It’s completely nonsense

Football is a dangerous sport. People get hurt. The best way for a person not to get hurt is not to play. Those who play may end up with CTE and other life-altering injuries. All of these targeting and "safety" rules are CYA to try to avoid lawsuits.
Kicking a kid out of a game and for part of the next game is absurd. Unless the guy takes off like Hacksaw Jim Duggan (IYKYK), it's ridiculous to penalize someone for an unintentional hit to the head.

I don’t know how defenders are even supposed to play football anymore. You can’t go for a big hit to jar the football lose without risking being ejected it’s insane

Targeting needs to go away completely and the missing a half needs to be stopped at the very least.

In a rule so subjective, so misapplied and the impossibility of making tackling "child-safe" in a violent sport, the most ridiculous is the carryover aspect which should not exist in American football. What is this Soccer? You get a red card and can't play next game? Too many adoptions of European sensitivities.

Not one comment about the conspiracy that was insinuated in the OP

I agree with all this, but the rule is what it is. Blame the rule makers, not the officials.
