It took Kelly 2 years (some would say 3) to get the guys he wanted and to build up depth.

It took Kiffin 1 semi-offseason.

Kelly clearly didn’t have a grasp on the new college football landscape

Kiffin is a breath of fresh air

Didn’t Kelly win the SEC west in year 1?

Obviously a fluke.

Why didn’t they even get close to that the following years when Kelly “had his guys”??

To be fair, very few did initially. The freedom of transfer rules were only supposed to be a temporary measure in 2020. Even then, it was only supposed to be a 1x "free" transfer. In fact, it wasn't until the fall of 2023 that the 1x transfer rule was basically abolished. And NIL didn't become "legal" until the summer of 2021

Initially the plan for BK was to quickly build the roster with transfers in 2022, but then revert back more to the "old" way of doing things, stacking HS classes, with which LSU had long had great success. That seemed reasonable at the time. Where BK screwed up was being too reliant on going back to the "old" way in 2023 when LSU had some big holes on defense he didn't fill with starting caliber transfers. That set the wheels in motion.

Kiffin was in a different position at OM. He long knew OM really couldn't consistently compete for blue chip HS talent with schools like Georgia, LSU, Alabama, etc. So there was less incentive for him to use the "old" way to build his roster because it never produced a ton of success for OM anyway. That made him more willing to adopt a transfer heavy approach because he really didn't have a lot of risk in doing so.

Are you implying those 38 were super talented?
I suppose you are correct because he did less each season after O's players left. Even after he brought in one of the highest rated Portal classes.
Orgeron must have been great at judging talent.
Best QB in LSU history and about half dozen great receivers.

I have a lot more faith in Kiffin, but I expect that the real improvement to the roster will be year #2. I am concerned about the number of new players coming from really small , not respected programs. Hope I'm wrong

Kelly let Frank Wilson do the recruiting he handled other things.
What they were I have no idea.

He hit a homerun w Jayden and that got him most of the way there. His teams regressed every year after.

Inconvenient fact that does not fit the narrative "Kelly Bad"

You forgot....he also brought in a transfer that went on to win the Heisman.
